¹此後，阿孟子民的君王納哈士死了，他的兒子繼位為王。	¹Now it came to pass that Naas the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned is his stead.
²達味心想：我要善待納哈士的兒子哈農，因為他父親曾善待了我。於是達味派遣使者去慰問他，哀悼他的父親。但當達味的臣僕來到阿孟子民的境內哈農那裏慰問他時，	²And David said: I will shew kindness to Hanon the son of Naas: for his father did a favour to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him upon the death of his father. But when they were come into the land of the children of Ammon, to comfort Hanon,
³阿孟子民的公卿對哈農說：「達味派人來慰問你，你以為他是尊敬你的父親嗎？他的臣僕到你這裏來，安知不是為調查、探聽、破壞這地方？」	³The princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanon: Thou thinkest perhaps that David to do honour to thy father hath sent comforters to thee: and thou dost not take notice, that his servants are come to thee to consider, and search, and spy out thy land.
⁴哈農遂拿住達味的臣僕，將他們的鬍鬚剃去，將他們下半截至臀部的衣服也都割去，然後放他們走了。	⁴Wherefore Hanon shaved the heads and beards of the servants of David, and cut away their garments from the buttocks to the feet, and sent them away.
⁵他們走了以後，有人將這些人所遭遇的事告訴了達味，達味遂即派人前去迎接他們；因為這些人很覺羞恥，王便吩咐說：「你們暫且留在耶里哥，等鬍鬚長起後再回來。」	⁵And when they were gone, they sent word to David, who sent to meet them (for they had suffered a great affront) and ordered them to stay at Jericho till their beards grew and then to return.
⁶阿孟子民見自己同達味結下了仇恨，哈農和阿孟子民便派人用一千「塔冷通」銀子，向二河之間的阿蘭，瑪阿加的阿蘭及祚巴去僱戰車和騎兵。	⁶And when the children of Ammon saw that they had done an injury to David, Hanon and the rest of the people sent a thousand talents of silver, to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria Maacha, and out of Soba.
⁷他們僱得了戰車三萬二千輛，又僱得了瑪阿加王和他的軍隊。他們來到，就在默德巴前紮營；阿孟子民也從自己的城內出來，集合備戰。	⁷And they hired two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maacha, with his people. And they came and camped over against Medaba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together out of their cities, and came to battle.
⁸達味一聽說，遂派約阿布率領全部精兵出擊。	⁸And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of valiant men:
⁹阿孟子民出來，在城門前擺了陣，來助戰的王子們另在田間擺了陣。	⁹And the children of Ammon came out and put their army in array before the gate of the city: and the kings, that were come to their aid, stood apart in the field.
¹⁰約阿布見前後受敵，便由以色列勁旅中，挑選一隊精兵擺陣進攻阿蘭人；	¹⁰Wherefore Joab understanding that the battle was set against him before and behind, chose out the bravest men of all Israel, and marched against the Syrians,
¹¹將其餘的軍隊，交由自己的兄弟阿彼瑟指揮，叫他列陣進攻阿孟子民，	¹¹And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abisai his brother, and they went against the children of Ammon.
¹²對他說：「若我打不下阿蘭人，你就來援助我；若你打不下阿蘭子民，我就來援助你。	¹²And he said: If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, I will help thee.
¹³你當勇敢！為了我們的民族，為了我們天主的城池，我們應當奮鬥。願上主成就他認為美好的事！」	¹³Be of good courage and let us behave ourselves manfully for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord will do that which is good in his sight.
¹⁴然後，約阿布帶着軍隊往前進攻阿蘭人，阿蘭人便在他面前逃走了。	¹⁴So Joab and the people that were with him, went against the Syrians to the battle: and he put them to flight.
¹⁵阿孟子民見阿蘭人逃走，他們也在約阿布的兄弟阿彼瑟面前逃走，退入城中；以後，約阿布回了耶路撒冷。	¹⁵And the children of Ammon seeing that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled from Abisai his brother, and went into the city: and Joab also returned to Jerusalem.
¹⁶阿蘭人見自己為以色列打敗，遂派使者將大河那邊的阿蘭人調來，由哈達德則爾的元帥芍法客率領。	¹⁶But the Syrians seeing that they had fallen before Israel, sent messengers, and brought to them the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Sophach, general of the army of Adarezer, was their leader.
¹⁷達味一得了情報，就調集所有的以色列人，渡過約但河，來到赫藍，擺陣向他們進攻。當達味擺陣攻擊阿蘭人時，阿蘭人就來迎戰。	¹⁷And it was told David, and he gathered together all Israel, and passed the Jordan, and came upon them, and put his army in array against them, and they fought with him.
¹⁸但阿蘭人在以色列面前潰退，達味乘勢擊殺了阿蘭七千騎兵，四萬步兵，也殺了他們的元帥芍法客。	¹⁸But the Syrian fled before Israel: and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and Sophach the general of the army.
¹⁹哈達德則爾的臣僕見他們敗於以色列，便與達味講和，表示臣服。從此阿蘭人再不敢協助阿孟子民了。	¹⁹And when the servants of Adarezer saw themselves overcome by Israel, they went over to David, and served him: and Syria would not help the children of Ammon any more.
