¹大司祭遂問說：「真是這樣嗎？」	¹Then the high priest said: Are these things so?
²斯德望答說：「諸位仁人弟兄，諸位父老，請聽！當我們的祖先亞巴郎還在美索不達米亞，還未住在哈蘭以前，榮耀的天主曾顯現給他，	²Who said: Ye men, brethren, and fathers, hear. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charan.
³向他說：『你要離開你的故鄉和你的家族，往我所指示你的地方去！』	³And said to him: Go forth out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
⁴那時，他遂離開了加色丁人的地方，住在哈蘭；他父親死後，天主又叫他從那裏遷移，來到你們現今所住的地方。	⁴Then he went out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charan. And from thence, after his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein you now dwell.
⁵在此地天主並沒有賜給他產業，連腳掌那麼大的地方也沒有給，卻應許了把此地賜給他和他以後的子孫做產業，雖然當時他還沒有兒子。	⁵And he gave him no inheritance in it; no, not the pace of a foot: but he promised to give it him in possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
⁶天主還這樣說過：『他的子孫要僑居異地，人要奴役虐待他們，共四百年之久。』	⁶And God said to him: That his seed should sojourn in a strange country, and that they should bring them under bondage, and treat them evil four hundred years.
⁷天主還說：『我要懲治那奴役他們的異民。此後，他們要出來，要在這地方恭敬我。』	⁷And the nation which they shall serve will I judge, said the Lord; and after these things they shall go out, and shall serve me in this place.
⁸天主又賜給了他割損的盟約；這樣，他生了依撒格後，第八天，給他行了割損禮。以後，依撒格生了雅各伯，雅各伯生了十二位宗祖。	⁸And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob; and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
⁹宗祖們嫉妒若瑟，把他賣到埃及，天主卻同他在一起，	⁹And the patriarchs, through envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; and God was with him,
¹⁰救他脫離了一切磨難，並在埃及王法郎面前使他得寵，有智慧，法郎就派他總理埃及和王家事務。	¹⁰And delivered him out of all his tribulations: and he gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharao, the king of Egypt; and he appointed him governor over Egypt, and over all his house.
¹¹後來在全埃及和客納罕發生了饑饉和大難，我們的祖先找不到食物。	¹¹Now there came a famine upon all Egypt and Chanaan, and great tribulation; and our fathers found no food.
¹²雅各伯聽說在埃及有糧食，就打發了我們的祖先去，這是第一次。	¹²But when Jacob had heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent our fathers first:
¹³第二次，若瑟被他的兄弟們認出來了。法郎也明悉了若瑟的親族。	¹³And at the second time, Joseph was known by his brethren, and his kindred was made known to Pharao.
¹⁴若瑟遂打發人請自己的父親和所有同族前來，共計七十五人。	¹⁴And Joseph sending, called thither Jacob, his father, and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.
¹⁵雅各伯下到了埃及，以後他和我們的祖先都死了；	¹⁵So Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died, and our fathers.
¹⁶後來他們被運到舍根，埋葬在亞巴郎用銀價從哈摩爾的兒子在舍根所買的墳墓中。	¹⁶And they were translated into Sichem, and were laid in the sepulchre, that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Hemor, the son of Sichem.
¹⁷天主向亞巴郎所應承的恩許的時期來近了，這民族在埃及就逐漸繁殖增多起來，	¹⁷And when the time of the promise drew near, which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased, and were multiplied in Egypt,
¹⁸直到另一位不認識若瑟的君王起來統治埃及，	¹⁸Till another king arose in Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
¹⁹他就用計謀壓迫我們的親族，虐待我們的祖先，叫他們拋棄自己的嬰孩，不容生存。	¹⁹This same dealing craftily with our race, afflicted our fathers, that they should expose their children, to the end they might not be kept alive.
²⁰就在那時期梅瑟誕生了，他為天主所喜愛；在父親家中養育了三個月。	²⁰At the same time was Moses born, and he was acceptable to God: who was nourished three months in his father's house.
²¹他被拋棄後，法郎的女兒卻將他拾去，當自己的兒子養育。	²¹And when he was exposed, Pharao's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
²²梅瑟學習了埃及人的各種智慧；他講話辦事，都有才幹。	²²And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians; and he was mighty in his words and in his deeds.
²³當他滿了四十歲的時候，他心中起了看望自己的弟兄──以色列子民的願望。	²³And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel.
²⁴他看見一個人受欺壓，就加以衛護，為受欺負的人報仇，打死了那個埃及人。	²⁴And when he had seen one of them suffer wrong, he defended him; and striking the Egyptian, he avenged him who suffered the injury.
²⁵他以為自己的弟兄明白天主要藉他的手拯救他們，但他們卻不明白。	²⁵And he thought that his brethren understood that God by his hand would save them; but they understood it not.
²⁶第二天，他看見他們打架，就勸他們和解說：同仁！你們原是弟兄，為什麼彼此傷害呢？	²⁶And the day following, he shewed himself to them when they were at strife; and would have reconciled them in peace, saying: Men, ye are brethren; why hurt you one another?
²⁷那欺壓近人的推開他說：誰立了你做我們的首領和判官？	²⁷But he that did the injury to his neighbour thrust him away, saying: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge over us?
²⁸難道你願意殺死我，就像昨天你殺死了那埃及人一樣嗎？	²⁸What, wilt thou kill me, as thou didst yesterday kill the Egyptian?
²⁹梅瑟因這句話，便逃跑了，在米德楊地方作客，在那裏生了兩個兒子。	²⁹And Moses fled upon this word, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begot two sons.
³⁰過了四十年，在西乃山的曠野裏，有一位使者在荊棘叢火燄中顯現給他。	³⁰And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the desert of mount Sina, an angel in a flame of fire in a bush.
³¹梅瑟一見，就奇怪這異像；他正要前去觀察，有上主的聲音說：	³¹And Moses seeing it, wondered at the sight. And as he drew near to view it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, saying:
³²『我是你祖先的天主，即亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯的天主。』梅瑟就戰慄起來，不敢前去觀察。	³²I am the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses being terrified, durst not behold.
³³上主向他說：『將你腳上的鞋脫下！因為你站的地方是聖地。	³³And the Lord said to him: Loose the shoes from thy feet, for the place wherein thou standest, is holy ground.
³⁴我看見了我百姓在埃及的苦楚，也聽見了他們的哀歎，遂下來拯救他們。現在你來，我要打發你到埃及去。』	³⁴Seeing I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, and I will send thee into Egypt.
³⁵這梅瑟就是他們曾否定說：『誰立了你做我們的首領和判官』的，天主卻藉着在荊棘中顯現的使者的手，打發他做首領和救贖者。	³⁵This Moses, whom they refused, saying: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge? him God sent to be prince and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
³⁶就是他領了他們出來，在埃及，在紅海，在曠野四十年之久，行了奇蹟異事。	³⁶He brought them out, doing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the desert forty years.
³⁷這人就是那給以色列子民說：『天主要從你們弟兄們中間，給你們興起一位像我似的先知』的梅瑟。	³⁷This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel: A prophet shall God raise up to you of your own brethren, as myself: him shall you hear.
³⁸就是他在曠野時，在會眾中，立在西乃山給他說話的使者和我們的祖先之間，領受生命的話，傳授給我們。	³⁸This is he that was in the church in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on mount Sina, and with our fathers; who received the words of life to give unto us.
³⁹我們的祖先卻不肯聽從他，反而拒絕他；他們的心已轉向埃及，	³⁹Whom our fathers would not obey; but thrust him away, and in their hearts turned back into Egypt,
⁴⁰遂向亞郎說：『請給我們製造神像，在我們面前引路，因為領我們出埃及地的這位梅瑟，我們不知道他遭遇了什麼事。』	⁴⁰Saying to Aaron: Make us gods to go before us. For as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
⁴¹他們就在那幾天製造了一個牛犢，向那偶像奉獻祭品，並因他們手中的作品而歡樂。	⁴¹And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
⁴²於是天主轉過身去，任憑他們恭敬天上的軍旅，就如在《先知書》上所載的：『以色列家！你們四十年在曠野中，何嘗向我奉獻過犧牲和祭品？	⁴²And God turned, and gave them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the books of the prophets: Did you offer victims and sacrifices to me for forty years, in the desert, O house of Israel?
⁴³你們抬着摩肋客的帳幕和楞番神的星辰，為朝拜你們所製造的偶像。為此，我要把你們遷徙到巴比倫那邊去。』	⁴³And you took unto you the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Rempham, figures which you made to adore them. And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
⁴⁴我們的祖先在曠野中有一個作證的帳幕，這帳幕就是天主吩咐梅瑟，按他所指示的式樣製造的。	⁴⁴The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the desert, as God ordained for them, speaking to Moses, that he should make it according to the form which he had seen.
⁴⁵我們的祖先相繼承受了它；當天主把異民從我們祖先的面前趕走之後，他們便同若蘇厄將此帳幕運到繼承為業之地，直到達味的時日。	⁴⁵Which also our fathers receiving, brought in with Jesus, into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David.
⁴⁶達味在天主面前獲得了寵愛，就懇求要為雅各伯的天主尋找一個住所；	⁴⁶Who found grace before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
⁴⁷撒羅滿便為天主建築了殿宇。	⁴⁷But Solomon built him a house.
⁴⁸但至高者本不住在人手所建造的殿宇中：正如先知說：	⁴⁸Yet the most High dwelleth not in houses made by hands, as the prophet saith:
⁴⁹『天是我的寶座，地是我的腳凳。你們要為我建築什麼樣的殿宇？──上主說──或者我安息的地方是怎樣的呢？	⁴⁹Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool. What house will you build me? saith the Lord; or what is the place of my resting?
⁵⁰這一切不是我的手所造的嗎？』	⁵⁰Hath not my hand made all these things?
⁵¹執拗和心耳未受割損的人啊！你們時常反抗聖神，你們的祖先怎樣，你們也怎樣。	⁵¹You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you also.
⁵²那一位先知，你們的祖先沒有迫害過﹖他們殺害了那些預言義人來臨的人，現在你們都成了那義人的出賣者和兇手。	⁵²Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them who foretold of the coming of the Just One; of whom you have been now the betrayers and murderers:
⁵³你們這些人接受了藉天使所傳佈的法律，卻不遵守。」	⁵³Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
⁵⁴他們一聽這些話，怒從心起，向他咬牙切齒。	⁵⁴Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him.
⁵⁵斯德望卻充滿了聖神，注目向天，看見天主的光榮，並看見耶穌站在天主右邊，	⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looking up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
⁵⁶遂說道：「看，我見天開了，並見人子站在天主右邊。」	⁵⁶And they crying out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and with one accord ran violently upon him.
⁵⁷他們都大聲亂嚷，掩着自己的耳朵一致向他撲去，	⁵⁷And casting him forth without the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man, whose name was Saul.
⁵⁸把他拉出城外，用石頭砸死了。證人脫下自己的衣服放在名叫掃祿的青年人腳前。	⁵⁸And they stoned Stephen, invoking, and saying: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
⁵⁹當他們用石頭砸斯德望的時候，他祈求說：「主耶穌！接我的靈魂去罷！」	⁵⁹And falling on his knees, he cried with a loud voice, saying: Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep in the Lord. And Saul was consenting to his death.
⁶⁰遂屈膝跪下，大聲呼喊說：「主，不要向他們算這罪債！」說了這話，就死了。	⁶⁰
