¹雅各伯定居在他父親作客的客納罕地方。	¹And Jacob dwelt in the land of Chanaan wherein his father sojourned.
²以下是雅各伯的小史。若瑟十七歲時，與哥哥們一同放羊。他尚年幼，常與自己的父親的妻子彼耳哈和齊耳帕的兒子們在一起。他不斷將他們作的惡事報告給父親。	²And these are his generations: Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being but a boy: and he was with the sons of Bala and of Zelpha his father's wives: and he accused his brethren to his father of a most wicked crime.
³以色列愛若瑟超過其他的兒子，因為是他年老生的，並給他做了一件彩色長衫。	³Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had him in his old age: and he made him a coat of divers colours.
⁴他的哥哥們見父親愛他勝過其餘的兒子，就忌恨他，不能與他和氣交談。	⁴And his brethren seeing that he was loved by his father, more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.
⁵若瑟作了一夢，講給哥哥們聽，因此他們越發惱恨他。	⁵Now it fell out also that he told his brethren a dream, that he had dreamed: which occasioned them to hate him the more.
⁶他對他們說：「請聽我作的夢：	⁶And he said to them: Hear my dream which I dreamed.
⁷我夢見我們同在田中捆麥子，忽然我的麥捆站起來，你們的麥捆圍住我的麥捆下拜。」	⁷I thought we were binding sheaves in the field: and my sheaf arose as it were, and stood, and your sheaves standing about, bowed down before my sheaf.
⁸他哥哥們對他說：「難道你要作我們的君王？或者統治我們？」他們為了這夢和這番話，越發惱恨他。	⁸His brethren answered: Shalt thou be our king? or shall we be subject to thy dominion? Therefore this matter of his dreams and words ministered nourishment to their envy and hatred.
⁹他又作了一夢，也告訴他哥哥們說：「我又作了一夢：夢見太陽和月亮並十一顆星辰向我下拜。」	⁹He dreamed also another dream, which he told his brethren, saying: I saw in a dream, as it were the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars worshipping me.
¹⁰當他給父親和哥哥們講說這夢時，他父親就責斥他說：「你作的是什麼夢？難道我和你母親以及你的兄弟，都要來向你叩首至地？」	¹⁰And when he had told this to his father and brethren, his father rebuked him, and said: What meaneth this dream that thou hast dreamed? shall I and thy mother, and thy brethren worship thee upon the earth?
¹¹他兄弟們都忌恨他；他父親卻將這事存在心裏。	¹¹His brethren therefore envied him: but his father considered the thing with himself.
¹²若瑟的哥哥們去了舍根，放他們父親的羊。	¹²And when his brethren abode in Sichem feeding their father's flocks,
¹³以色列對若瑟說：「你哥哥們不是在舍根放羊麼？來，我打發你去看看他們。」他回答說：「我在這裏。」	¹³Israel said to him: Thy brethren feed the sheep in Sichem: come, I will send thee to them. And when he answered:
¹⁴以色列對他說：「你去看看你哥哥們是否平安，羊群怎樣；然後回來告訴我。」以色列便打發他由赫貝龍山谷前去；他到了舍根。	¹⁴I am ready: he said to him: Go, and see if all things be well with thy brethren, and the cattle: and bring me word again what is doing. So being sent from the vale of Hebron, he came to Sichem:
¹⁵有一個人見他在田間遊蕩，那人就問他說：「你尋找什麼？」	¹⁵And a man found him there wandering in the field, and asked what he sought.
¹⁶他答說：「我尋找我的哥哥；請告訴我：他們在那裏放羊？」	¹⁶But he answered: I seek my brethren; tell me where they feed the flocks.
¹⁷那人答說：「他們已離開了這裏；我聽見他們說：我們到多堂去。」於是若瑟便去追尋他的哥哥，在多堂找到了。	¹⁷And the man said to him: They are departed from this place: for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothain. And Joseph went forward after his brethren, and found them in Dothain.
¹⁸他們老遠就看見了他；在他尚未來近以前，就已決定要謀殺他。	¹⁸And when they saw him afar off, before he came nigh them, they thought to kill him.
¹⁹他們彼此說：「看，那作夢的人來了！	¹⁹And said one to another: Behold the dreamer cometh.
²⁰我們殺掉他，將他拋在一口井裏，說是猛獸吃了。看他的夢還有什麼用？」	²⁰Come, let us kill him, and cast him into some old pit: and we will say: Some evil beast hath devoured him: and then it shall appear what his dreams avail him:
²¹勒烏本聽了，就設法由他們手中救他，遂說：「我們不要害他！」	²¹And Ruben hearing this, endeavoured to deliver him out of their hands, and said:
²²勒烏本又對他們說：「你們不要流血；只將他丟在這曠野的井裏，不可下手害他。」他的意思是想由他們手中救出他來，還給父親。	²²Do not take away his life, nor shed his blood: but cast him into this pit, that is in the wilderness, and keep your hands harmless: now he said this, being desirous to deliver him out of their hands and to restore him to his father.
²³若瑟一來到他哥哥們那裏，他們就脫去了他穿的那件彩色長衣，抓住他，把他丟在井裏；	²³And as soon as he came to his brethren, they forthwith stript him of his outside coat, that was of divers colours:
²⁴那井是空的，裏面沒有水。	²⁴And cast him into an old pit, where there was no water.
²⁵他們坐下吃飯時，舉目看見一隊由基肋阿得來的依市瑪耳人；他們的駱駝滿載樹膠、香液和香料，要下到埃及去。	²⁵And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ismaelites on their way coming from Galaad, with their camels, carrying spices, and balm, and myrrh to Egypt.
²⁶猶大遂對兄弟們說：「殺害我們的弟弟，隱瞞他的血，究竟有什麼益處？	²⁶And Juda said to his brethren: What will it profit us to kill our brother, and conceal his blood?
²⁷不如將他賣給依市瑪耳人，免得對他下毒手，因為他究竟是我們的兄弟，是我們的骨肉。」兄弟們聽從了他的意見。	²⁷It is better that he be sold to the Ismaelites, and that our hands be not defiled: for he is our brother and our flesh. His brethren agreed to his words.
²⁸米德楊的商人經過那裏時，他們便從井中拉出若瑟來，以二十塊銀錢賣給了依市瑪耳人；他們便將若瑟帶到埃及去了。	²⁸And when the Madianite merchants passed by, they drew him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ismaelites, for twenty pieces of silver: and they led him into Egypt.
²⁹勒烏本回到井邊，不見若瑟在井內，遂撕裂了自己的衣服，	²⁹And Ruben, returning to the pit, found not the boy:
³⁰回到兄弟們那裏喊說：「孩子不見了！我可往那裏去呢？」	³⁰And rending his garments he went to his brethren, and said: The boy doth not appear and whither shall I go?
³¹他們於是拿了若瑟的長衣，殺了一隻公山羊，將長衣浸在血裏；	³¹And they took his coat, and dipped it in the blood of a kid, which they had killed:
³²然後派人將那件彩色的長衣送給他們的父親說：「這是我們尋得的，請你仔細看看，是不是你兒子的長衣？」	³²Sending some to carry it to their father, and to say: This we have found: see whether it be thy son's coat, or not.
³³雅各伯仔細一看，就喊說：「是我兒子的長衣；猛獸將他吃了。若瑟被撕裂了，被撕裂了！」	³³And the father acknowledging it, said: It is my son's coat, an evil wild beast hath eaten him, a beast hath devoured Joseph.
³⁴雅各伯遂撕裂了自己的衣服，腰間圍上麻衣，為自己的兒子悲哀了多日。	³⁴And tearing his garments, he put on sackcloth, mourning for his son a long time.
³⁵雖然他的兒女都來安慰他，他卻不肯接受他們的安慰，說：「我只有悲哀地下到陰間，往我兒那裏去！」他的父親竟這樣哀悼他。	³⁵And all his children being gathered together to comfort their father in his sorrow, he would not receive comfort, but said: I will go down to my son into hell, mourning. And whilst he continued weeping,
³⁶米德楊人後來在埃及將若瑟賣給了法郎的內臣，衛隊長普提法爾。	³⁶The Madianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Putiphar, an eunuch of Pharao, captain of the soldiers.
