| 1有一個法利塞黨人，名叫尼苛德摩，是個猶太人的首領。 | 1And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. |
| 2有一夜，他來到耶穌前，向他說：「辣彼，我們知道你是由天主而來的師傅，因為天主若不同他在一起，誰也不能行你所行的這些神蹟。」 | 2This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him. |
| 3耶穌回答說：「我實實在在告訴你：人除非由上而生，不能見到天主的國。」 | 3Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. |
| 4尼苛德摩說：「人已年老，怎樣能重生呢？難道他還能再入母腹而重生嗎？」 | 4Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again? |
| 5耶穌回答說：「我實實在在告訴你：人除非由水和聖神而生，不能進天主的國： | 5Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. |
| 6由肉生的屬於肉，由神生的屬於神。 | 6That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit. |
| 7你不要驚奇，因我給你說了：你們應該由上而生。 | 7Wonder not, that I said to thee, you must be born again. |
| 8風隨意向那裏吹，你聽到風的響聲，卻不知道風從那裏來，往那裏去：凡由聖神而生的就是這樣。」 | 8The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. |
| 9尼苛德摩問說：「這事怎樣能成就呢？」 | 9Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done? |
| 10耶穌回答說：「你是以色列的師傅，連這事你都不知道嗎？ | 10Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things? |
| 11我實實在在告訴你：我們知道的，我們纔講論；我們見過的，我們纔作證；而你們卻不接受我們的見證。 | 11Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony. |
| 12若我給你們說地上的事，你們尚且不信；若我給你們說天上的事，你們怎麼會信呢？ | 12If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things? |
| 13沒有人上過天，除了那自天降下而仍在天上的人子。 | 13And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. |
| 14正如梅瑟曾在曠野裏高舉了蛇，人子也應照樣被舉起來， | 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up: |
| 15使凡信的人，在他內得永生。」 | 15That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting. |
| 16天主竟這樣愛了世界，甚至賜下了自己的獨生子，使凡信他的人不至喪亡，反而獲得永生， | 16For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. |
| 17因為天主沒有派遣子到世界上來審判世界，而是為叫世界藉着他而獲救。 | 17For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. |
| 18那信從他的，不受審判；那不信的，已受了審判，因為他沒有信從天主獨生子的名字。 | 18He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God. |
| 19審判就在於此：光明來到了世界，世人卻愛黑暗甚於光明，因為他們的行為是邪惡的。 | 19And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. |
| 20的確，凡作惡的，都憎惡光明，也不來就光明，怕自己的行為彰顯出來； | 20For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved. |
| 21然而履行真理的，卻來就光明，為顯示出他的行為是在天主內完成的。 | 21But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God. |
| 22此後，耶穌和門徒來到猶太地，同他們一起住在那裏施洗。 | 22After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea: and there he abode with them, and baptized. |
| 23那時若翰也在臨近撒林的艾農施洗，因為那裏水多，人們常來受洗。 | 23And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim; because there was much water there; and they came and were baptized. |
| 24那時，若翰尚未被投在監獄裏。 | 24For John was not yet cast into prison. |
| 25若翰的門徒和一個猶太人，關於取潔禮發生了爭辯。 | 25And there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews concerning purification: |
| 26他們便來到若翰前對他說：「辣彼！曾同你一起在約但河對岸，你給他作證的那位，看，他也施洗；並且眾人都到他那裏去了。」 | 26And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou gavest testimony, behold he baptizeth, and all men come to him. |
| 27若翰回答說：「人不能領受什麼，除非有天上的賞賜。 | 27John answered, and said: A man cannot receive any thing, unless it be given him from heaven. |
| 28你們自己可以給我作證，我曾說過：我不是默西亞，我只是被派遣作他前驅的， | 28You yourselves do bear me witness, that I said, I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him. |
| 29有新娘的是新郎；新郎的朋友，侍立靜聽，一聽得新郎的聲音，就非常喜樂：我的喜樂已滿足了。 | 29He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with joy because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled. |
| 30他應該興盛，我卻應該衰微。」 | 30He must increase, but I must decrease. |
| 31那由上而來的，超越一切。那出於下地的，是屬於下地，且講論下地的事；那自上天而來的，超越萬有之上， | 31He that cometh from above, is above all. He that is of the earth, of the earth he is, and of the earth he speaketh. He that cometh from heaven, is above all. |
| 32他對所見所聞的，予以作證，卻沒有人接受他的見證。 | 32And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth: and no man receiveth his testimony. |
| 33那接受他見證的人，就是證實天主是真實的。 | 33He that hath received his testimony, hath set to his seal that God is true. |
| 34天主所派遣的，講論天主的話，因為天主把聖神無限量地賞賜了他。 | 34For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God doth not give the Spirit by measure. |
| 35父愛子，並把一切交在他手中。 | 35The Father loveth the Son: and he hath given all things into his hand. |
| 36那信從子的，便有永生；那不信從子的，不但不會見到生命，反有天主的義怒常在他身上。 | 36He that believeth in the Son, hath life everlasting; but he that believeth not the Son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. |
