¹德敖斐羅鈞座：關於在我們中間所完成的事蹟，已有許多人，依照那些自始親眼見過，並為真道服役的人所傳給我們的，着手編成了記述，我也從起頭仔細訪查了一切，遂立意按着次第給你寫出來，	¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us;
²為使你認清給你所講授的道理，正確無誤。	²According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:
³在猶太王黑落德的時候，阿彼雅班中有一位司祭名叫匝加利亞，他的妻子是出於亞郎的後代，名叫依撒伯爾。	³It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
⁴二人在天主前是義人，都照上主的一切誡命和禮規行事，無可指摘。	⁴That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.
⁵但是，他們沒有孩子，因為依撒伯爾素不生育，兩人又都上了年紀。	⁵There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.
⁶正逢匝加利亞輪着他的班次，在天主前盡司祭的職務時，	⁶And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame.
⁷按着司祭的常例，他抽中了籤，得進上主的聖所獻香。	⁷And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
⁸獻香的時候，眾百姓都在外面祈禱。	⁸And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the order of his course before God,
⁹有一位上主的天使站在香壇右邊顯現給他。	⁹According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.
¹⁰匝加利亞一見，驚惶失措，害怕起來；	¹⁰And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense.
¹¹但天使向他說：「匝加利亞，不要害怕！因為你的祈禱已蒙應允，你的妻子依撒伯爾要給你生一個兒子，你要給他起名叫若翰。	¹¹And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the alter of incense.
¹²你必要喜樂歡躍，許多人也要因他的誕生而喜樂，	¹²And Zachary seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
¹³因為他在上主面前將是偉大的，淡酒濃酒他都不喝，而且，他還在母胎中就要充滿聖神；	¹³But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John:
¹⁴他要使許多以色列子民轉向上主，他們的天主；	¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice in his nativity.
¹⁵他要以厄里亞的精神和能力，在他前面先行，使為父的心轉向兒子，使悖逆者轉向義人的心意，並為上主準備一個善良的百姓。」	¹⁵For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
¹⁶匝加利亞遂向天使說：「我憑着什麼能知道這事呢？因為我已經老了，我的妻子也上了年紀。」	¹⁶And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
¹⁷天使回答說：「我是站在天主面前的加俾額爾，奉命來向你說話，報給你這個喜訊。	¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias; that he may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.
¹⁸看，你必成為啞吧，不能說話，直到這些事成就的那一天，因為你沒有相信我的話；但我的話屆時必要應驗。」	¹⁸And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.
¹⁹百姓等候匝加利亞，都奇怪他滯留在聖所內。	¹⁹And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God: and am sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.
²⁰及至他出來後，竟不能與他們講話，他們這纔知道他在聖所中見了異象；他已成了啞吧，只給他們打手勢。	²⁰And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be able to speak until the day wherein these things shall come to pass, because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.
²¹他供職的日期一滿，就回了家。	²¹And the people were waiting for Zachary; and they wondered that he tarried so long in the temple.
²²幾天以後，他的妻子依撒伯爾受了孕，自己躲藏了五個月，說：	²²And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to them, and remained dumb.
²³「上主在眷顧的日子這樣待了我，除去了我在人間的恥辱。」	²³And it came to pass, after the days of his office were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
²⁴到了第六個月，天使加俾額爾奉天主差遣，往加里肋亞一座名叫納匝肋的城去，	²⁴And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying:
²⁵到一位童貞女那裏，她已與達味家族中的一個名叫若瑟的男子訂了婚，童貞女的名字叫瑪利亞。	²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had regard to take away my reproach among men.
²⁶天使進去向她說：「萬福！充滿恩寵者，上主與你同在！」【在女人中你是蒙祝福的。】	²⁶And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
²⁷她卻因這話驚惶不安，便思慮這樣的請安有什麼意思。	²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
²⁸天使對她說：「瑪利亞，不要害怕，因為你在天主前獲得了寵幸。	²⁸And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
²⁹看，你將懷孕生子，並要給他起名叫耶穌。	²⁹Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
³⁰他將是偉大的，並被稱為至高者的兒子，上主天主要把他祖先達味的御座賜給他。	³⁰And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
³¹他要為王統治雅各伯家，直到永遠；他的王權沒有終結。」	³¹Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
³²瑪利亞便向天使說：「這事怎能成就？因為我不認識男人。」	³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.
³³天使答覆她說：「聖神要臨於你，至高者的能力要庇廕你，因此，那要誕生的聖者，將稱為天主的兒子。	³³And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
³⁴且看，你的親戚依撒伯爾，她雖在老年，卻懷了男胎，本月已六個月了，她原是素稱不生育的，	³⁴And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?
³⁵因為在天主前沒有不能的事。」	³⁵And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
³⁶瑪利亞說：「看！上主的婢女，願照你的話成就於我罷！」天使便離開她去了。	³⁶And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
³⁷瑪利亞就在那幾日起身，急速往山區去，到了猶大的一座城。	³⁷Because no word shall be impossible with God.
³⁸她進了匝加利亞的家，就給依撒伯爾請安。	³⁸And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
³⁹依撒伯爾一聽到瑪利亞請安，胎兒就在她的腹中歡躍。依撒伯爾遂充滿了聖神，	³⁹And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
⁴⁰大聲呼喊說：「在女人中你是蒙祝福的，你的胎兒也是蒙祝福的。	⁴⁰And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
⁴¹吾主的母親駕臨我這裏，這是我那裏得來的呢？	⁴¹And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
⁴²看，你請安的聲音一入我耳，胎兒就在我腹中歡喜踴躍。	⁴²And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
⁴³那信了由上主傳於她的話必要完成的，是有福的。」	⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
⁴⁴瑪利亞遂說：「我的靈魂頌揚上主，	⁴⁴For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
⁴⁵我的心神歡躍於天主，我的救主，	⁴⁵And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
⁴⁶因為他垂顧了她婢女的卑微，今後萬世萬代都要稱我有福；	⁴⁶And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
⁴⁷因全能者在我身上行了大事，他的名字是聖的，	⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
⁴⁸他的仁慈世世代代於無窮世，賜與敬畏他的人。	⁴⁸Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
⁴⁹他伸出了手臂施展大能，驅散那些心高氣傲的人。	⁴⁹Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.
⁵⁰他從高座上推下權勢者，卻舉揚了卑微貧困的人。	⁵⁰And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.
⁵¹他曾使饑餓者飽饗美物，反使那富有者空手而去。	⁵¹He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
⁵²他曾回憶起自己的仁慈，扶助了他的僕人以色列，	⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
⁵³正如他向我們的祖先所說過的恩許，施恩於亞巴郎和他的子孫，直到永遠。」	⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
⁵⁴瑪利亞同依撒伯爾住了三個月左右，就回本家去了。	⁵⁴He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:
⁵⁵依撒伯爾滿了產期，就生了一個兒子。	⁵⁵As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
⁵⁶她的鄰居和親戚聽說上主向她大施仁慈，都和她一同歡樂。	⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.
⁵⁷到了第八天，人們來給這孩子行割損禮，並願意照他父親的名字叫他匝加利亞。	⁵⁷Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.
⁵⁸他的母親說：「不，要叫他若翰。」	⁵⁸And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.
⁵⁹他們就向她說：「在你親族中沒有叫這個名字的。」	⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father's name Zachary.
⁶⁰他們便給他的父親打手勢，看他願意叫他什麼。	⁶⁰And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.
⁶¹他要了一塊小板，寫道：「若翰是他的名字。」眾人都驚訝起來。	⁶¹And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
⁶²匝加利亞的口和舌頭立時開了，遂開口讚美天主。	⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
⁶³於是，所有的鄰居都滿懷怕情；這一切事就傳遍了全猶大山區，	⁶³And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.
⁶⁴凡聽見的人都將這事存在心中，說：「這孩子將成為什麼人物啊？」因為上主的手與他同在。	⁶⁴And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
⁶⁵他的父親匝加利亞充滿了聖神，遂預言說：	⁶⁵And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.
⁶⁶「上主，以色列的天主應受讚美，因他眷顧救贖了自己的民族，	⁶⁶And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
⁶⁷並在自己的僕人達味家中，為我們興起了大能的救主，	⁶⁷And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:
⁶⁸正如他藉歷代諸聖先知的口所說過的，	⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
⁶⁹拯救我們脫離敵人和仇恨我們者的手。	⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant:
⁷⁰他向我們的祖先施行仁慈，記憶起他自己的神聖盟約，	⁷⁰As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning:
⁷¹就是他向我們的祖宗亞巴郎所宣述的誓詞，	⁷¹Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:
⁷²恩賜我們從敵人手中被救出以後，無恐無懼，	⁷²To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament,
⁷³一生一世在他面前，以聖善和正義事奉他。	⁷³The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us,
⁷⁴至於你，小孩，你要稱為至高者的先知，因你要走在上主前面，為他預備道路，	⁷⁴That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,
⁷⁵為使他的百姓認識救恩，以獲得他們罪惡的寬宥：	⁷⁵In holiness and justice before him, all our days.
⁷⁶這是出於我們天主的慈懷，使旭日由高天向我們照耀，	⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
⁷⁷為光照那坐在黑暗和死影中的人，並引我們的腳步，走向和平的道路。」	⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins:
⁷⁸這小孩漸漸長大，心神堅強。他住在荒野中，直到他在以色列人前出現的日期。	⁷⁸Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
⁷⁹	⁷⁹To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.
⁸⁰	⁸⁰And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit; and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
