¹那時，洗者若翰出現在猶太曠野宣講，	¹And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea.
²說：「你們悔改罷！因為天國臨近了。」	²And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
³這人便是那藉依撒意亞先知所預言的：「在曠野裏有呼號者的聲音：你們該當預備上主的道路，修直他的途徑。」	³For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
⁴這若翰穿着駱駝毛做的衣服，腰間束着皮帶，他的食物是蝗蟲和野蜜。	⁴And the same John had his garment of camels' hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
⁵那時，耶路撒冷、全猶太以及全約但河一帶的人，都出來到他那裏去，	⁵Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan:
⁶承認自己的罪過，並在約但河裏受他的洗。	⁶And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
⁷他見到許多法利塞人和撒杜塞人來受他的洗，就對他們說：「毒蛇的種類！誰指教你們逃避那即將來臨的忿怒？	⁷And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?
⁸那麼，就結與悔改相稱的果實罷！	⁸Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance.
⁹你們自己不要思念說：我們有亞巴郎為父。我給你們說：天主能從這些石頭給亞巴郎興起子孫來。	⁹And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
¹⁰斧子已放在樹根上了，凡不結好果子的樹，必被砍倒，投入火中。	¹⁰For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire.
¹¹我固然用水洗你們，為使你們悔改；但在我以後要來的那一位，比我更強，我連提他的鞋也不配，他要以聖神及火洗你們。	¹¹I indeed baptize you in the water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.
¹²他的簸箕已在他手中，他要揚淨自己的禾場，將他的麥粒收入倉內，至於糠粃，卻要用不滅的火焚燒。」	¹²Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
¹³那時，耶穌由加里肋亞來到約但河若翰那裏，為受他的洗；	¹³Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him.
¹⁴但若翰想要阻止他說：「我本來需要受你的洗，而你卻來就我嗎？」	¹⁴But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me?
¹⁵耶穌回答他說：「你暫且容許罷！因為我們應當這樣，以完成全義。」於是若翰就容許了他。	¹⁵And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfill all justice. Then he suffered him.
¹⁶耶穌受洗後，立時從水裏上來，忽然天為他開了。他看見天主聖神有如鴿子降下，來到他上面；	¹⁶And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him.
¹⁷又有聲音由天上說：「這是我的愛子，我所喜悅的。」	¹⁷And behold a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
