¹在凱撒勒雅有一個人，名叫科爾乃略，是所謂意大利營的百夫長。	¹There was in Caesarea a man named Cornelius, captain of what was called the Italian Battalion.
²他同他的全家，是虔誠而敬畏天主的人，對百姓慷慨好施，又常向天主祈禱。	²He was a religious and God-fearing man together with his whole household. He gave generously to the people and constantly prayed to God.
³有一天，大約第九時辰，他在異像中，清楚看見天主的一位天使進來，到他跟前向他說：「科爾乃略！」	³One afternoon at about three he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel of God coming towards him and calling him, "Cornelius!"
⁴他注目看天使，就驚惶害怕說：「主，有什麼事？」天使回答說：「你的祈禱和施捨已升到天主面前，獲得紀念。	⁴He stared at the vision with awe and said, "What is it, sir?" And the angel answered, "Your prayers and your alms have just been recalled before God.
⁵你現在打發人往約培去，請號稱伯多祿的一位西滿來。	⁵Now send some men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon also known as Peter;
⁶這人客居在一個名叫西滿的皮匠家裏，他的房子靠着海。」	⁶he is the guest of Simon, a tanner, who lives beside the sea."
⁷向他說話的天使一走，他便叫來了兩個家僕和常護衛自己的一個虔誠兵士，	⁷As soon as the angel who spoke to him departed, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those attached to his service,
⁸把一切事告訴了他們，就打發他們往約培去了。	⁸and after having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
⁹第二天，他們行路將近城的時候，約在第六個時辰，伯多祿上了屋頂祈禱。	⁹The next day, while they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up to the roof at about noon to pray.
¹⁰他那時餓了，願意進食；正在人預備飯的時候，他就神魂超拔了。	¹⁰He became hungry and wished to eat, but while they were preparing food, he fell into a trance.
¹¹他看見天開了，降下一個器皿，好像一塊大布，繫着四角，縋到地上，	¹¹The heavens were opened to him and he saw an object that looked like a large sheet coming down, until it rested on the ground by its four corners.
¹²裏面有各種四足獸、地上的爬蟲和天空的飛鳥。	¹²In it were all kinds of four-legged animals of the earth, reptiles and birds.
¹³有聲音向他說：「伯多祿！起來，宰了，吃罷！」	¹³Then a voice said to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!"
¹⁴伯多祿卻答說：「主，絕對不可！因為我從來沒有吃過一樣污穢和不潔之物。」	¹⁴But Peter replied, "Certainly not, Lord! I have never eaten any defiled or unclean creature."
¹⁵聲音第二次又向他說：「天主稱為潔淨的，你不可稱為污穢！」	¹⁵And again a second time the voice spoke, "What God has made clean, you must not call unclean."
¹⁶這事一連發生了三次，那器皿隨即撤回天上去了。	¹⁶This happened three times and then the sheet was taken up again into the sky.
¹⁷伯多祿正在猜想他所見的異像有什麼意思的時候，看，科爾乃略打發來的人，已查問到西滿的家，站在門前。	¹⁷While Peter was still puzzling over the meaning of the vision he had seen, the messengers of Cornelius arrived at the gate asking for the house of Simon.
¹⁸他們喊着詢問：號稱伯多祿的西滿是否住在這裏。	¹⁸They called out to inquire whether Simon, also known as Peter, was staying there.
¹⁹伯多祿還在沉思那異像時，聖神說：「看，有三個人找你。	¹⁹At that moment, as Peter continued pondering on the vision, the Spirit spoke to him, "There are men looking for you;
²⁰起來，下去，同他們一起去罷！不要疑惑，因為是我打發他們來的。」	²⁰get up and go downstairs and follow them without hesitation, for I have sent them."
²¹伯多祿下來向那些人說：「看，我就是你們所找的人。你們來這裏做什麼？」	²¹So Peter went and said to the men, "I am the one you are looking for. What brings you here?" They answered,
²²他們答說：「科爾乃略百夫長是個正義和敬畏天主的人，也受全猶太人民的稱譽；他蒙聖天使指示，請你到他家去，聽你講道。」	²²"He who sent us is Captain Cornelius. He is an upright and God-fearing man, well respected by all the Jewish people. He has been instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, so that he may listen to what you have to say."
²³伯多祿於是請他們進來住下，第二天起來，便同他們一齊去了；還有幾個約培的兄弟陪着他。	²³So Peter invited them in and put them up for the night. The next day he went off with them and some of the believers from Joppa accompanied him.
²⁴次日，他到了凱撒勒雅。那時，科爾乃略召集了自己的親戚和密友，等候他們來。	²⁴The following day, he arrived in Caesarea where Cornelius was expecting them; he had called together his relatives and close friends.
²⁵當伯多祿進來的時候，科爾乃略去迎接他，跪伏在他腳前叩拜。	²⁵As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius went to him, fell on his knees and bowed low.
²⁶伯多祿拉他起來說：「起來！我自己也是個人。」	²⁶But Peter lifted him up saying, "Stand up, for I too am a human being."
²⁷就同他談着話進去了，看見有許多人聚集在那裏，	²⁷After talking with him, Peter entered and found many people assembled there.
²⁸便對他們說：「你們都知道猶太人是不准同外邦人交接來往的；但是，天主指示給我，沒有一個可說是污穢或不潔的人。	²⁸Then he said to them, "You know that it is forbidden for Jews to associate with anyone of another nation or to enter their houses. But God has made it clear to me that no one should call any person common or unclean;
²⁹為此，我一被請，毫不猶豫地就來了。請問：你們請我來是為什麼原故？」	²⁹because of this I came at once when I was sent for. Now I should like to know why you sent for me."
³⁰科爾乃略說：「從此時起，四天以前，第九時辰，我在我房中祈禱時，忽然有位穿華麗衣服的人站在我面前，	³⁰Cornelius then answered, "Just three days ago at this time, about three in the afternoon, I was praying in my house when a man in shining clothes stood before me
³¹說：科爾乃略，你的祈禱蒙了垂允，你的施捨在天主前得到記念。	³¹and said to me: 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer, and your alms have been remembered before him.
³²所以，你要打發人往約培去，叫號稱伯多祿的西滿來，他客居在靠近海的皮匠西滿家裏。	³²Send someone, therefore, to Joppa and ask for Simon, also known as Peter, who is guest at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.'
³³我就立刻打發人到你那裏去了。你來的真好！現今我們眾人都在天主前，要聽主所吩咐你的一切。」	³³So I sent for you at once and you have been kind enough to come. Now we are all here in God's presence, waiting to hear all that the Lord has commanded you to say."
³⁴伯多祿遂開口說：「我真正明白了：天主是不看情面的，	³⁴Peter then spoke to them, "Truly, I realize that God does not show partiality,
³⁵凡在各民族中，敬畏他而又履行正義的人，都是他所中悅的。	³⁵but in all nations he listens to everyone who fears God and does good.
³⁶他藉耶穌基督──他原是萬民的主──宣講了和平的喜訊，把這道先傳給以色列子民。	³⁶And this is the message he has sent to the children of Israel, the good news of peace he has proclaimed through Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all.
³⁷你們都知道：在若翰宣講洗禮以後，從加里肋亞開始，在全猶太所發生的事：	³⁷No doubt you have heard of the event that occurred throughout the whole country of the Jews, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism John preached.
³⁸天主怎樣以聖神和德能傅了納匝肋的耶穌，使他巡行各處，施恩行善，治好一切受魔鬼壓制的人，因為天主同他在一起。	³⁸You know how God anointed Jesus the Nazarean with Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all who were under the devil's power, because God was with him;
³⁹我們就是他在猶太人地域和耶路撒冷所行一切的見證人。他們卻把他懸在木架上，殺死了。	³⁹we are witnesses of all that he did throughout the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem itself. Yet they put him to death by hanging him on a wooden cross.
⁴⁰第三天，天主使他復活了，叫他顯現出來，	⁴⁰But God raised him to life on the third day and let him manifest himself,
⁴¹不是給所有的百姓，而是給天主所預揀的見證人，就是給我們這些在他從死者中復活後，與他同食共飲的人。	⁴¹not to all the people, but to the witnesses that were chosen beforehand by God - to us who ate and drank with him after his resurrection from death.
⁴²他吩咐我們向百姓講道，指證他就是天主所立的生者與死者的判官。	⁴²And he commanded us to preach to the people and to bear witness that he is the one appointed by God to judge the living and the dead.
⁴³一切先知都為他作證：凡信他的人，賴他的名字都要獲得罪赦。」	⁴³All the prophets say of him, that everyone who believes in him has forgiveness of sins through his Name."
⁴⁴伯多祿還在講這些話的時候，聖神降在所有聽道的人身上。	⁴⁴Peter was still speaking when the Holy Spirit came upon all who listened to the Word.
⁴⁵那些受過割損與伯多祿同來的信徒，都驚訝聖神的恩惠也傾注在外邦人身上，	⁴⁵And the believers of Jewish origin who had come with Peter were amazed, "Why! God gives and pours the Holy Spirit on foreigners also!"
⁴⁶因為聽見他們說各種語言，並頌揚天主。那時，伯多祿就發言說：	⁴⁶For indeed this happened: they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
⁴⁷「這些人既領受了聖神，和我們一樣，誰能阻止他們不受水洗呢？」	⁴⁷Then Peter declared, "Can we refuse to baptize with water these people who have received the Holy Spirit, just as we have?"
⁴⁸遂吩咐人以耶穌基督的名給他們付洗。以後，他們求伯多祿再住了幾天。	⁴⁸So he had them baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. After that they asked him to remain with them for some days.
