¹大司祭遂問說：「真是這樣嗎？」	¹So the High Priest asked him: "Is it true?" He answered, "Brothers and fathers, listen to me.
²斯德望答說：「諸位仁人弟兄，諸位父老，請聽！當我們的祖先亞巴郎還在美索不達米亞，還未住在哈蘭以前，榮耀的天主曾顯現給他，	²The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he went to live in Haran. And he said to him:
³向他說：『你要離開你的故鄉和你的家族，往我所指示你的地方去！』	³'Leave your land and your relatives and go to the land which I will show you.'
⁴那時，他遂離開了加色丁人的地方，住在哈蘭；他父親死後，天主又叫他從那裏遷移，來到你們現今所住的地方。	⁴So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After the death of his father, God made him move to this land in which you now dwell.
⁵在此地天主並沒有賜給他產業，連腳掌那麼大的地方也沒有給，卻應許了把此地賜給他和他以後的子孫做產業，雖然當時他還沒有兒子。	⁵And there he did not give him anything that was his own, not even the smallest portion of land to put his foot on, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his descendants, though he had no child.
⁶天主還這樣說過：『他的子孫要僑居異地，人要奴役虐待他們，共四百年之久。』	⁶So God spoke: 'Your descendants shall live in a strange land, they shall be enslaved and maltreated for four hundred years.
⁷天主還說：『我要懲治那奴役他們的異民。此後，他們要出來，要在這地方恭敬我。』	⁷So I shall call the nation which they serve as slaves to render an account for it. They will come out and worship me in this place.'
⁸天主又賜給了他割損的盟約；這樣，他生了依撒格後，第八天，給他行了割損禮。以後，依撒格生了雅各伯，雅各伯生了十二位宗祖。	⁸He made with him the covenant of circumcision. And so, at the birth of his son Isaac, Abraham circumcised him on the eighth day. Isaac did the same to Jacob, and Jacob to the twelve patriarchs.
⁹宗祖們嫉妒若瑟，把他賣到埃及，天主卻同他在一起，	⁹The patriarchs envied Joseph so they sold him into Egypt. But God was with him.
¹⁰救他脫離了一切磨難，並在埃及王法郎面前使他得寵，有智慧，法郎就派他總理埃及和王家事務。	¹⁰He rescued him from all his afflictions, granted him wisdom and made him please Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him governor of Egypt and of the whole of his household.
¹¹後來在全埃及和客納罕發生了饑饉和大難，我們的祖先找不到食物。	¹¹Then there was famine in all the land of Egypt and Canaan; it was a great misery and our ancestors did not have anything to eat.
¹²雅各伯聽說在埃及有糧食，就打發了我們的祖先去，這是第一次。	¹²Upon learning that there was wheat in Egypt, Jacob sent our ancestors there on their first visit.
¹³第二次，若瑟被他的兄弟們認出來了。法郎也明悉了若瑟的親族。	¹³On the second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Pharaoh came to know the family of Joseph.
¹⁴若瑟遂打發人請自己的父親和所有同族前來，共計七十五人。	¹⁴Joseph commanded that his father Jacob be brought to him with the whole of his family of seventy-five persons.
¹⁵雅各伯下到了埃及，以後他和我們的祖先都死了；	¹⁵Jacob then went down to Egypt where he and our ancestors died.
¹⁶後來他們被運到舍根，埋葬在亞巴郎用銀價從哈摩爾的兒子在舍根所買的墳墓中。	¹⁶They were transferred to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor at Shechem.
¹⁷天主向亞巴郎所應承的恩許的時期來近了，這民族在埃及就逐漸繁殖增多起來，	¹⁷As the time of promise drew near, which God had made to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt
¹⁸直到另一位不認識若瑟的君王起來統治埃及，	¹⁸until came another king who did not know Joseph.
¹⁹他就用計謀壓迫我們的親族，虐待我們的祖先，叫他們拋棄自己的嬰孩，不容生存。	¹⁹Dealing cunningly with our race, he forced our ancestors to abandon their newborn infants and let them die.
²⁰就在那時期梅瑟誕生了，他為天主所喜愛；在父親家中養育了三個月。	²⁰At that time Moses was born, and God looked kindly on him. For three months he was nursed in the home of his father;
²¹他被拋棄後，法郎的女兒卻將他拾去，當自己的兒子養育。	²¹and when they abandoned him, Pharaoh's daughter took him and raised him as her own son.
²²梅瑟學習了埃及人的各種智慧；他講話辦事，都有才幹。	²²So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in word and deed.
²³當他滿了四十歲的時候，他心中起了看望自己的弟兄──以色列子民的願望。	²³And when he was forty years old, he wanted to visit his own people, the Israelites.
²⁴他看見一個人受欺壓，就加以衛護，為受欺負的人報仇，打死了那個埃及人。	²⁴When he saw one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and killed the Egyptian.
²⁵他以為自己的弟兄明白天主要藉他的手拯救他們，但他們卻不明白。	²⁵He thought his kinsfolk would understand that God was sending him to them as a liberator, but they did not understand.
²⁶第二天，他看見他們打架，就勸他們和解說：同仁！你們原是弟兄，為什麼彼此傷害呢？	²⁶On the following day, he came to them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them, saying: 'You are brothers, why do you hurt each other?'
²⁷那欺壓近人的推開他說：誰立了你做我們的首領和判官？	²⁷At that moment, the one who was injuring his companion rebuffed him saying: 'Who appointed you as our leader and judge?
²⁸難道你願意殺死我，就像昨天你殺死了那埃及人一樣嗎？	²⁸Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'
²⁹梅瑟因這句話，便逃跑了，在米德楊地方作客，在那裏生了兩個兒子。	²⁹When Moses heard this, he fled and went to live as a stranger in the land of Midian where he had two sons.
³⁰過了四十年，在西乃山的曠野裏，有一位使者在荊棘叢火燄中顯現給他。	³⁰After forty years an angel appeared to him in the desert of Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning bush.
³¹梅瑟一見，就奇怪這異像；他正要前去觀察，有上主的聲音說：	³¹Moses was astonished at the vision. And as he approached to look at it, he heard the voice of the Lord:
³²『我是你祖先的天主，即亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯的天主。』梅瑟就戰慄起來，不敢前去觀察。	³²'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.' Moses was filled with fear and did not dare look at it.
³³上主向他說：『將你腳上的鞋脫下！因為你站的地方是聖地。	³³But the Lord said to him: 'Take off your sandals for the place where you stand is holy ground.
³⁴我看見了我百姓在埃及的苦楚，也聽見了他們的哀歎，遂下來拯救他們。現在你來，我要打發你到埃及去。』	³⁴I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt and heard them weeping, and I have come down to free them. And now, get up! I am sending you to Egypt.'
³⁵這梅瑟就是他們曾否定說：『誰立了你做我們的首領和判官』的，天主卻藉着在荊棘中顯現的使者的手，打發他做首領和救贖者。	³⁵This Moses whom they rejected saying: 'Who appointed you leader and judge?' God sent as leader and liberator with the assistance of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
³⁶就是他領了他們出來，在埃及，在紅海，在曠野四十年之久，行了奇蹟異事。	³⁶He led them out, performing signs and wonders in Egypt, at the Red Sea and in the desert for forty years.
³⁷這人就是那給以色列子民說：『天主要從你們弟兄們中間，給你們興起一位像我似的先知』的梅瑟。	³⁷This Moses is the one who said to the Israelites: 'God will give you a prophet like me from among your own people.'
³⁸就是他在曠野時，在會眾中，立在西乃山給他說話的使者和我們的祖先之間，領受生命的話，傳授給我們。	³⁸This is the one who in the Assembly in the desert became the mediator between the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and our ancestors; and he received the words of life that he might communicate them to us.
³⁹我們的祖先卻不肯聽從他，反而拒絕他；他們的心已轉向埃及，	³⁹But him our ancestors refused to obey, they rejected him and turned their hearts to Egypt, saying to Aaron:
⁴⁰遂向亞郎說：『請給我們製造神像，在我們面前引路，因為領我們出埃及地的這位梅瑟，我們不知道他遭遇了什麼事。』	⁴⁰'Give us gods to lead us since we do not know what has happened to that Moses who brought us out of Egypt.'
⁴¹他們就在那幾天製造了一個牛犢，向那偶像奉獻祭品，並因他們手中的作品而歡樂。	⁴¹So in those days, they fashioned a calf, offered sacrifices to their idol and rejoiced in the work of their hands.
⁴²於是天主轉過身去，任憑他們恭敬天上的軍旅，就如在《先知書》上所載的：『以色列家！你們四十年在曠野中，何嘗向我奉獻過犧牲和祭品？	⁴²So God departed from them and let them worship the stars of heaven, as it is written in the Book of the Prophets: 'People of Israel, did you offer me burnt offerings and sacrifices for forty years in the desert?
⁴³你們抬着摩肋客的帳幕和楞番神的星辰，為朝拜你們所製造的偶像。為此，我要把你們遷徙到巴比倫那邊去。』	⁴³No, you carried instead the tent of Moloch and the star of the god Rehan, images you made to worship, for this I will banish you farther than Babylon.'
⁴⁴我們的祖先在曠野中有一個作證的帳幕，這帳幕就是天主吩咐梅瑟，按他所指示的式樣製造的。	⁴⁴Our ancestors had the Tent of Meeting in the desert, for God had directed Moses to build it according to the pattern he had seen.
⁴⁵我們的祖先相繼承受了它；當天主把異民從我們祖先的面前趕走之後，他們便同若蘇厄將此帳幕運到繼承為業之地，直到達味的時日。	⁴⁵Our ancestors received it and brought it under the command of Joshua into the lands of the pagans that they conquered and whom God expelled before them. They kept it until the days of David
⁴⁶達味在天主面前獲得了寵愛，就懇求要為雅各伯的天主尋找一個住所；	⁴⁶who found favor with God and asked him to let him build a house for the God of Jacob.
⁴⁷撒羅滿便為天主建築了殿宇。	⁴⁷However, it was Solomon who built that temple.
⁴⁸但至高者本不住在人手所建造的殿宇中：正如先知說：	⁴⁸In reality, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands as the Prophet says:
⁴⁹『天是我的寶座，地是我的腳凳。你們要為我建築什麼樣的殿宇？──上主說──或者我安息的地方是怎樣的呢？	⁴⁹'Heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, how could you give me a dwelling place?
⁵⁰這一切不是我的手所造的嗎？』	⁵⁰Was it not I who made all these things?'
⁵¹執拗和心耳未受割損的人啊！你們時常反抗聖神，你們的祖先怎樣，你們也怎樣。	⁵¹But you are a stubborn people, you hardened your hearts and closed your ears. You have always resisted the Holy Spirit just as your fathers did.
⁵²那一位先知，你們的祖先沒有迫害過﹖他們殺害了那些預言義人來臨的人，現在你們都成了那義人的出賣者和兇手。	⁵²Was there a prophet whom your ancestors did not persecute? They killed those who announced the coming of the Just One whom you have now betrayed and murdered,
⁵³你們這些人接受了藉天使所傳佈的法律，卻不遵守。」	⁵³you who received the Law through the angels but did not fulfill it."
⁵⁴他們一聽這些話，怒從心起，向他咬牙切齒。	⁵⁴When they heard this reproach, they were enraged and they gnashed their teeth against Stephen.
⁵⁵斯德望卻充滿了聖神，注目向天，看見天主的光榮，並看見耶穌站在天主右邊，	⁵⁵But he, full of the Holy Spirit, fixed his eyes on heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus at God's right hand,
⁵⁶遂說道：「看，我見天開了，並見人子站在天主右邊。」	⁵⁶so he declared: "I see the heavens open and the Son of Man at the right hand of God."
⁵⁷他們都大聲亂嚷，掩着自己的耳朵一致向他撲去，	⁵⁷But they shouted and covered their ears with their hands and rushed together upon him.
⁵⁸把他拉出城外，用石頭砸死了。證人脫下自己的衣服放在名叫掃祿的青年人腳前。	⁵⁸They brought him out of the city and stoned him, and the witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul.
⁵⁹當他們用石頭砸斯德望的時候，他祈求說：「主耶穌！接我的靈魂去罷！」	⁵⁹As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed saying: "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
⁶⁰遂屈膝跪下，大聲呼喊說：「主，不要向他們算這罪債！」說了這話，就死了。	⁶⁰Then he knelt down and said in a loud voice: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he died.
