| 1在起初已有聖言，聖言與天主同在，聖言就是天主。 | 1In the beginning was the Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God; |
| 2聖言在起初就與天主同在。 | 2he was in the beginning with God. |
| 3萬物是藉着他而造成的；凡受造的，沒有一樣不是由他而造成 的。 | 3All things were made through him and without him nothing came to be. Whatever has come to be, |
| 4在他內有生命，這生命是人的光。 | 4found life in him, life which for humans was also light. |
| 5光在黑暗中照耀，黑暗決不能勝過他。 | 5Light that shines in the dark: light that darkness could not overcome. |
| 6曾有一人，由天主派遣來的，名叫若翰。 | 6A man came, sent by God; his name was John. |
| 7這人來，是為作證，為給光作證，為使眾人藉他而信。 | 7He came to bear witness, as a witness to introduce the Light so that all might believe through him. |
| 8他不是那光，只是為給那光作證。 | 8He was not the Light but a witness to introduce the Light. |
| 9那普照每人的真光，正在進入這世界； | 9For the Light was coming into the world, the true Light that enlightens everyone. |
| 10他已在世界上，世界原是藉着他造成的；但世界卻不認識他。 | 10He was already in the world and through him the world was made, the very world that did not know him. |
| 11他來到了自己的領域，自己的人卻沒有接受他。 | 11He came to his own, yet his own people did not receive him; |
| 12但是，凡接受他的，他給他們，即給那些信他的名字的人權能，好成為天主的子女。 | 12but all who have received him he empowers to become children of God for they believe in his Name. |
| 13他們不是由血氣，也不是由肉慾，也不是由男慾，而是由天主生的。 | 13These are born, but without seed or carnal desire or will of man: they are born of God. |
| 14於是，聖言成了血肉，寄居在我們中間；我們見了他的光榮，正如父獨生者的光榮，滿溢恩寵和真理。 | 14And the Word was made flesh; he had his tent pitched among us, and we have seen his Glory, the Glory of the only Son coming from the Father: fullness of truth and loving-kindness. |
| 15若翰為他作證呼喊說：「這就是我所說的：那在我以後來的，成了在我以前的，因他原先我而有。」 | 15John bore witness to him openly, saying: This is the one who comes after me, but he is already ahead of me for he was before me. |
| 16從他的滿盈中，我們都領受了恩寵，而且恩寵上加恩寵。 | 16From his fullness we have all received, favor upon favor. |
| 17因為法律是藉梅瑟傳授的，恩寵和真理卻是由耶穌基督而來的。 | 17For God had given us the Law through Moses, but Truth and Loving-kindness came through Jesus Christ. |
| 18從來沒有人見過天主，只有那在父懷裏的獨生者，身為天主的，他給我們詳述了。 | 18No one has ever seen God, but God-the-Only-Son made him known: the one who is in and with the Father. |
| 19這是若翰所作的見證：當時，猶太人從耶路撒冷派遣了司祭和肋未人，到他那裏問他說：「你是誰？」 | 19This was the testimony of John when the jews sent priests and levites to ask him, "Who are you?" |
| 20他明明承認，並沒有否認；他明認說：「我不是默西亞。」 | 20John recognized the truth and did not deny it. he said, "I am not the Messiah." |
| 21他們又問他說：「那麼你是誰？你是厄里亞嗎？」他說：「我不是。」「你是那位先知嗎？」他回答說：「不是。」 | 21And they asked him, "Then who are you? Elijah?" He answered, "I am not." They said, "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." |
| 22於是他們問他說：「你究竟是誰？好叫我們給那派遣我們來的人一個答覆。關於你自己，你說什麼呢？」 | 22Then they said to him, "Tell us who you are, so that we can give some answer to those who sent us. How do you see yourself?" |
| 23他說：「我是在曠裏呼喊者的聲音：修直上主的道路罷！正如依撒意亞先知所說的。」 | 23And John said, quoting the prophet Isaiah, "I am the voice crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord." |
| 24被派遣來的有些是法利塞人。 | 24Those who had been sent were Pharisees; |
| 25他們又問他說：「你既不是默西亞，又不是厄里亞，也不是那位先知，那麼，你為什麼施洗呢？」 | 25so they put a further question to John: "Then why are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?" |
| 26若翰答覆他們說：「我以水施洗，你們中間站着一位，是你們所不認識的； | 26John answered, "I baptize you with water, but among you stands one whom you do not know; |
| 27他在我以後來，我卻當不起解他的鞋帶。」 | 27although he comes after me, I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal." |
| 28這些事發生於約但河對岸的伯達尼，若翰施洗的地方。 | 28This happened in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. |
| 29第二天，若翰見耶穌向他走來，便說：「看，天主的羔羊，除免世罪者！ | 29The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, "There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. |
| 30這位就是我論他曾說過：有一個人在我以後來，成了在我以前的，因他原先我而有。 | 30It is he of whom I said: A man comes after me who is already ahead of me, for he was before me. |
| 31連我也不曾認識他，但為使他顯示於以色列，為此，我來以水施洗。」 | 31I myself did not know him, but I came baptizing to prepare for him, so that he might be revealed in Israel." |
| 32若翰又作證說：「我看見聖神彷彿鴿子從天降下，停在他身上。 | 32And John also gave this testimony, "I saw the Spirit coming down on him like a dove from heaven and resting on him. |
| 33我也不曾認識他，但那派遣我來以水施洗的，給我說：你看見聖神降下，停在誰身上，誰就是那要以聖神施洗的人。 | 33I myself did not know him but God who sent me to baptize told me: 'You will see the Spirit coming down and resting on the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' |
| 34我看見了，我便作證：他就是天主子。」 | 34Yes, I have seen! and I declare that this is the Chosen One of God." |
| 35第二天，若翰和他的兩個門徒，又在那裏站着， | 35On the following day John was standing there again with two of his disciples. |
| 36若翰看見耶穌走過，便注視着他說：「看，天主的羔羊！」 | 36As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and said, "There is the Lamb of God." |
| 37那兩個門徒聽見他說這話，便跟隨了耶穌。 | 37On hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. |
| 38耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟着，便問他們說：「你們找什麼？」他們回答說：「辣彼！──意即師傅──你住在那裏？」 | 38He turned and saw them following, and he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They answered, "Rabbi (which means Master), where are you staying?" |
| 39他向他們說：「你們來看看罷！」他們於是去了，看了他住的地方；並且那一天就在他那裏住下了。那時，大約是第十時辰。 | 39Jesus said, "Come and see." So they went and saw where he stayed and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. |
| 40西滿伯多祿的哥哥安德肋，就是聽了若翰的話，而跟隨了耶穌的那兩人中的一個， | 40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard what John had said and followed Jesus. |
| 41先去找到了自己的弟弟西滿，並向他說：「我們找到了默西亞」──意即基督。 | 41Early the next morning he found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means the Christ), |
| 42遂領他到耶穌跟前，耶穌注視着他說：「你是若望的兒子西滿，你要叫『刻法』」──意即伯多祿。 | 42and he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, son of John, but you shall be called Cephas" (which means Rock). |
| 43第二天，耶穌願意往加里肋亞去，遇到了斐理伯，耶穌便向他說：「你跟隨我罷！」 | 43The next day, Jesus decided to set off for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." |
| 44斐理伯是貝特賽達人，與安德肋和伯多祿同城。 | 44Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. |
| 45斐理伯遇到納塔乃耳，就向他說：「梅瑟在法律上所記載，和先知們所預報的，我們找着了，就是若瑟的兒子，出身於納匝肋的耶穌。」 | 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found the one that Moses wrote about in the Law, and the prophets as well: he is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth." |
| 46納塔乃耳便向他說：「從納匝肋還能出什麼好事嗎？」斐理伯向他說：「你來看一看罷！」 | 46Nathanael replied, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." |
| 47耶穌看見納塔乃耳向自己走來，就指着他說：「看，這確是一個以色列人，在他內毫無詭詐。」 | 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, he said of him, "Here comes an Israelite, a true one; there is nothing false in him." |
| 48納塔乃耳給他說：「你從那裏認識我呢？」耶穌回答說：「斐理伯叫你以前，當你還在無花果樹下時，我就看見了你。」 | 48Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" And Jesus said to him, "Before Philip called you, you were under the fig tree and I saw you." |
| 49納塔乃耳回答說：「辣彼！你是天主子，你是以色列的君王。」 | 49Nathanael answered, "Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" |
| 50耶穌遂說道：「因為我向你說：我看見了你在無花果樹下，你就信了嗎？你要看見比這更大的事！」 | 50But Jesus replied, "You believe because I said: 'I saw you under the fig tree.' But you will see greater things than that. |
| 51又向他說：「我實實在在告訴你們：你們要看見天開，天主的天使在人子身上，上去下來。」 | 51Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." |
