| 1有一個法利塞黨人，名叫尼苛德摩，是個猶太人的首領。 | 1Among the Pharisees there was a ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus. |
| 2有一夜，他來到耶穌前，向他說：「辣彼，我們知道你是由天主而來的師傅，因為天主若不同他在一起，誰也不能行你所行的這些神蹟。」 | 2He came to Jesus by night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God to teach us, for no one can perform miraculous signs like yours unless God is with him." |
| 3耶穌回答說：「我實實在在告訴你：人除非由上而生，不能見到天主的國。」 | 3Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again from above." |
| 4尼苛德摩說：「人已年老，怎樣能重生呢？難道他還能再入母腹而重生嗎？」 | 4Nicodemus said, "How can there be rebirth for a grown man? Who could go back to his mother's womb and be born again?" |
| 5耶穌回答說：「我實實在在告訴你：人除非由水和聖神而生，不能進天主的國： | 5Jesus replied, "Truly, I say to you: No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. |
| 6由肉生的屬於肉，由神生的屬於神。 | 6What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. |
| 7你不要驚奇，因我給你說了：你們應該由上而生。 | 7Because of this, don't be surprised when I say: 'You must be born again from above.' |
| 8風隨意向那裏吹，你聽到風的響聲，卻不知道風從那裏來，往那裏去：凡由聖神而生的就是這樣。」 | 8The wind blows where it pleases and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit." |
| 9尼苛德摩問說：「這事怎樣能成就呢？」 | 9Nicodemus asked again, "How can this be?" |
| 10耶穌回答說：「你是以色列的師傅，連這事你都不知道嗎？ | 10And Jesus answered, "You are a teacher in Israel, and you don't know these things! |
| 11我實實在在告訴你：我們知道的，我們纔講論；我們見過的，我們纔作證；而你們卻不接受我們的見證。 | 11Truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we witness to the things we have seen, but you don't accept our testimony. |
| 12若我給你們說地上的事，你們尚且不信；若我給你們說天上的事，你們怎麼會信呢？ | 12If you don't believe when I speak of earthly things, what then, when I speak to you of heavenly things? |
| 13沒有人上過天，除了那自天降下而仍在天上的人子。 | 13No one has ever gone up to heaven except the one who came from heaven, the Son of Man. |
| 14正如梅瑟曾在曠野裏高舉了蛇，人子也應照樣被舉起來， | 14As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, |
| 15使凡信的人，在他內得永生。」 | 15so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. |
| 16天主竟這樣愛了世界，甚至賜下了自己的獨生子，使凡信他的人不至喪亡，反而獲得永生， | 16Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. |
| 17因為天主沒有派遣子到世界上來審判世界，而是為叫世界藉着他而獲救。 | 17God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world; instead, through him the world is to be saved. |
| 18那信從他的，不受審判；那不信的，已受了審判，因為他沒有信從天主獨生子的名字。 | 18Whoever believes in him will not be condemned. He who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God. |
| 19審判就在於此：光明來到了世界，世人卻愛黑暗甚於光明，因為他們的行為是邪惡的。 | 19This is how the Judgment is made: Light has come into the world and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. |
| 20的確，凡作惡的，都憎惡光明，也不來就光明，怕自己的行為彰顯出來； | 20For whoever does wrong hates the light and doesn't come to the light for fear that his deeds will be shown as evil. |
| 21然而履行真理的，卻來就光明，為顯示出他的行為是在天主內完成的。 | 21But whoever lives according to the truth comes into the light so that it can be clearly seen that his works have been done in God." |
| 22此後，耶穌和門徒來到猶太地，同他們一起住在那裏施洗。 | 22After this, Jesus went into the territory of Judea with his disciples. He stayed there with them and baptized. |
| 23那時若翰也在臨近撒林的艾農施洗，因為那裏水多，人們常來受洗。 | 23John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim where water was plentiful; people came to him and were baptized. |
| 24那時，若翰尚未被投在監獄裏。 | 24This happened before John was put in prison. |
| 25若翰的門徒和一個猶太人，關於取潔禮發生了爭辯。 | 25Now John's disciples had been questioned by a Jew about spiritual cleansing, |
| 26他們便來到若翰前對他說：「辣彼！曾同你一起在約但河對岸，你給他作證的那位，看，他也施洗；並且眾人都到他那裏去了。」 | 26so they came to him and said, "Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, and about whom you spoke favorably, is now baptizing and all are going to him." |
| 27若翰回答說：「人不能領受什麼，除非有天上的賞賜。 | 27John answered, "No one can take on anything except what has been given him from heaven. |
| 28你們自己可以給我作證，我曾說過：我不是默西亞，我只是被派遣作他前驅的， | 28You yourselves are my witnesses that I said: 'I am not the Christ but I have been sent before him.' |
| 29有新娘的是新郎；新郎的朋友，侍立靜聽，一聽得新郎的聲音，就非常喜樂：我的喜樂已滿足了。 | 29Only the bridegroom has the bride; but the friend of the bridegroom stands by and listens, and rejoices to hear the bridegroom's voice. My joy is now full. |
| 30他應該興盛，我卻應該衰微。」 | 30It is necessary that he increase but that I decrease. |
| 31那由上而來的，超越一切。那出於下地的，是屬於下地，且講論下地的事；那自上天而來的，超越萬有之上， | 31He who comes from above is above all; he who comes from the earth belongs to the earth and his words, too, are earthly. The One who comes from heaven |
| 32他對所見所聞的，予以作證，卻沒有人接受他的見證。 | 32speaks of the things he has seen and heard; he bears witness to this but no one accepts his testimony. |
| 33那接受他見證的人，就是證實天主是真實的。 | 33Whoever does receive his testimony acknowledges the truthfulness of God. |
| 34天主所派遣的，講論天主的話，因為天主把聖神無限量地賞賜了他。 | 34The one sent by God speaks God's words and gives the Spirit without measure. |
| 35父愛子，並把一切交在他手中。 | 35For the Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything into his hands. |
| 36那信從子的，便有永生；那不信從子的，不但不會見到生命，反有天主的義怒常在他身上。 | 36Whoever believes in the Son lives with eternal life, but he who will not believe in the Son will never know life and always faces the justice of God." |
