| 1德敖斐羅鈞座：關於在我們中間所完成的事蹟，已有許多人，依照那些自始親眼見過，並為真道服役的人所傳給我們的，着手編成了記述，我也從起頭仔細訪查了一切，遂立意按着次第給你寫出來， | 1Several people have set themselves to relate the events that have taken place among us, |
| 2為使你認清給你所講授的道理，正確無誤。 | 2as they were told by the first witnesses who later became ministers of the Word. |
| 3在猶太王黑落德的時候，阿彼雅班中有一位司祭名叫匝加利亞，他的妻子是出於亞郎的後代，名叫依撒伯爾。 | 3After I myself had carefully gone over the whole story from the beginning, it seemed right for me to give you, Theophilus, an orderly account, |
| 4二人在天主前是義人，都照上主的一切誡命和禮規行事，無可指摘。 | 4so that your Excellency may know the truth of all you have been taught. |
| 5但是，他們沒有孩子，因為依撒伯爾素不生育，兩人又都上了年紀。 | 5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there lived a priest named Zechariah, belonging to the priestly clan of Abiah. Elizabeth, Zechariah's wife, also belonged to a priestly family. |
| 6正逢匝加利亞輪着他的班次，在天主前盡司祭的職務時， | 6Both of them were upright in the eyes of God and lived blamelessly in accordance with all the laws and commands of the Lord, |
| 7按着司祭的常例，他抽中了籤，得進上主的聖所獻香。 | 7but they had no child. Elizabeth could not have any and now they were both very old. |
| 8獻香的時候，眾百姓都在外面祈禱。 | 8Now, while Zechariah and those with him were fulfilling their office, |
| 9有一位上主的天使站在香壇右邊顯現給他。 | 9it fell to him by lot, according to the custom of the priests, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. |
| 10匝加利亞一見，驚惶失措，害怕起來； | 10At the time of offering incense all the people were praying outside; |
| 11但天使向他說：「匝加利亞，不要害怕！因為你的祈禱已蒙應允，你的妻子依撒伯爾要給你生一個兒子，你要給他起名叫若翰。 | 11it was then that an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. |
| 12你必要喜樂歡躍，許多人也要因他的誕生而喜樂， | 12On seeing the angel, Zechariah was deeply troubled and fear took hold of him. |
| 13因為他在上主面前將是偉大的，淡酒濃酒他都不喝，而且，他還在母胎中就要充滿聖神； | 13But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zechariah, be assured that your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and you shall name him John. |
| 14他要使許多以色列子民轉向上主，他們的天主； | 14He will bring joy and gladness to you and many will rejoice at his birth. |
| 15他要以厄里亞的精神和能力，在他前面先行，使為父的心轉向兒子，使悖逆者轉向義人的心意，並為上主準備一個善良的百姓。」 | 15This son of yours will be great in the eyes of the Lord. Listen: he shall never drink wine or strong drink, but he will be filled with holy spirit even from his mother's womb. |
| 16匝加利亞遂向天使說：「我憑着什麼能知道這事呢？因為我已經老了，我的妻子也上了年紀。」 | 16Through him many of the people of Israel will turn to the Lord their God. |
| 17天使回答說：「我是站在天主面前的加俾額爾，奉命來向你說話，報給你這個喜訊。 | 17He himself will open the way to the Lord with the spirit and power of the prophet Elijah; he will reconcile fathers and children, and lead the disobedient to wisdom and righteousness, in order to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." |
| 18看，你必成為啞吧，不能說話，直到這些事成就的那一天，因為你沒有相信我的話；但我的話屆時必要應驗。」 | 18Zechariah said to the angel, "How can I believe this? I am an old man and my wife is elderly, too." |
| 19百姓等候匝加利亞，都奇怪他滯留在聖所內。 | 19The angel replied, "I am Gabriel, who stand before God, and I am the one sent to speak to you and bring you this good news! My words will come true in their time. |
| 20及至他出來後，竟不能與他們講話，他們這纔知道他在聖所中見了異象；他已成了啞吧，只給他們打手勢。 | 20But you would not believe and now you will be silent and unable to speak until this has happened." |
| 21他供職的日期一滿，就回了家。 | 21Meanwhile the people waited for Zechariah, and they were surprised that he delayed so long in the sanctuary. |
| 22幾天以後，他的妻子依撒伯爾受了孕，自己躲藏了五個月，說： | 22When he finally appeared, he could not speak to them and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He remained dumb and made signs to them. |
| 23「上主在眷顧的日子這樣待了我，除去了我在人間的恥辱。」 | 23When his time of service was completed, Zechariah returned home |
| 24到了第六個月，天使加俾額爾奉天主差遣，往加里肋亞一座名叫納匝肋的城去， | 24and some time later Elizabeth became pregnant. For five months she kept to herself, remaining at home, and thinking, |
| 25到一位童貞女那裏，她已與達味家族中的一個名叫若瑟的男子訂了婚，童貞女的名字叫瑪利亞。 | 25"What is the Lord doing for me! This is his time for mercy and for taking away my public disgrace." |
| 26天使進去向她說：「萬福！充滿恩寵者，上主與你同在！」【在女人中你是蒙祝福的。】 | 26In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. He was sent |
| 27她卻因這話驚惶不安，便思慮這樣的請安有什麼意思。 | 27to a young virgin who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. |
| 28天使對她說：「瑪利亞，不要害怕，因為你在天主前獲得了寵幸。 | 28The angel came to her and said, "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you." |
| 29看，你將懷孕生子，並要給他起名叫耶穌。 | 29Mary was troubled at these words, wondering what this greeting could mean. |
| 30他將是偉大的，並被稱為至高者的兒子，上主天主要把他祖先達味的御座賜給他。 | 30But the angel said, "Do not fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. |
| 31他要為王統治雅各伯家，直到永遠；他的王權沒有終結。」 | 31You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus. |
| 32瑪利亞便向天使說：「這事怎能成就？因為我不認識男人。」 | 32He will be great and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob for-ever |
| 33天使答覆她說：「聖神要臨於你，至高者的能力要庇廕你，因此，那要誕生的聖者，將稱為天主的兒子。 | 33and his reign shall have no end." |
| 34且看，你的親戚依撒伯爾，她雖在老年，卻懷了男胎，本月已六個月了，她原是素稱不生育的， | 34Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be if I am a virgin?" |
| 35因為在天主前沒有不能的事。」 | 35And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born shall be called Son of God. |
| 36瑪利亞說：「看！上主的婢女，願照你的話成就於我罷！」天使便離開她去了。 | 36Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting a son in her old age, although she was unable to have a child, and she is now in her sixth month. |
| 37瑪利亞就在那幾日起身，急速往山區去，到了猶大的一座城。 | 37With God nothing is impossible." |
| 38她進了匝加利亞的家，就給依撒伯爾請安。 | 38Then Mary said, "I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said." And the angel left her. |
| 39依撒伯爾一聽到瑪利亞請安，胎兒就在她的腹中歡躍。依撒伯爾遂充滿了聖神， | 39Mary then set out for a town in the Hills of Judah. |
| 40大聲呼喊說：「在女人中你是蒙祝福的，你的胎兒也是蒙祝福的。 | 40She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. |
| 41吾主的母親駕臨我這裏，這是我那裏得來的呢？ | 41When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with holy spirit, and |
| 42看，你請安的聲音一入我耳，胎兒就在我腹中歡喜踴躍。 | 42giving a loud cry, said, "You are most blessed among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! |
| 43那信了由上主傳於她的話必要完成的，是有福的。」 | 43How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? |
| 44瑪利亞遂說：「我的靈魂頌揚上主， | 44The moment your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy. |
| 45我的心神歡躍於天主，我的救主， | 45Blessed are you who believed that the Lord's word would come true!" |
| 46因為他垂顧了她婢女的卑微，今後萬世萬代都要稱我有福； | 46And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, |
| 47因全能者在我身上行了大事，他的名字是聖的， | 47my spirit exults in God my savior! |
| 48他的仁慈世世代代於無窮世，賜與敬畏他的人。 | 48He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. |
| 49他伸出了手臂施展大能，驅散那些心高氣傲的人。 | 49The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name! |
| 50他從高座上推下權勢者，卻舉揚了卑微貧困的人。 | 50From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. |
| 51他曾使饑餓者飽饗美物，反使那富有者空手而去。 | 51He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. |
| 52他曾回憶起自己的仁慈，扶助了他的僕人以色列， | 52He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. |
| 53正如他向我們的祖先所說過的恩許，施恩於亞巴郎和他的子孫，直到永遠。」 | 53He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. |
| 54瑪利亞同依撒伯爾住了三個月左右，就回本家去了。 | 54He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, |
| 55依撒伯爾滿了產期，就生了一個兒子。 | 55even as he promised our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever." |
| 56她的鄰居和親戚聽說上主向她大施仁慈，都和她一同歡樂。 | 56Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home. |
| 57到了第八天，人們來給這孩子行割損禮，並願意照他父親的名字叫他匝加利亞。 | 57When the time came for Elizabeth, she gave birth to a son. |
| 58他的母親說：「不，要叫他若翰。」 | 58Her neighbors and relatives heard that the merciful Lord had done a wonderful thing for her and they rejoiced with her. |
| 59他們就向她說：「在你親族中沒有叫這個名字的。」 | 59When on the eighth day they came to attend the circumcision of the child, they wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. |
| 60他們便給他的父親打手勢，看他願意叫他什麼。 | 60But his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John." |
| 61他要了一塊小板，寫道：「若翰是他的名字。」眾人都驚訝起來。 | 61They said to her, "No one in your family has that name"; |
| 62匝加利亞的口和舌頭立時開了，遂開口讚美天主。 | 62and they asked the father by means of signs for the name he wanted to give. |
| 63於是，所有的鄰居都滿懷怕情；這一切事就傳遍了全猶大山區， | 63Zechariah asked for a writing tablet and wrote on it, "His name is John," and they were very surprised. |
| 64凡聽見的人都將這事存在心中，說：「這孩子將成為什麼人物啊？」因為上主的手與他同在。 | 64Immediately Zechariah could speak again and his first words were in praise of God. |
| 65他的父親匝加利亞充滿了聖神，遂預言說： | 65A holy fear came on all in the neighborhood, and throughout the Hills of Judea the people talked about these events. |
| 66「上主，以色列的天主應受讚美，因他眷顧救贖了自己的民族， | 66All who heard of it pondered in their minds and wondered, "What will this child be?" For they understood that the hand of the Lord was with him. |
| 67並在自己的僕人達味家中，為我們興起了大能的救主， | 67Zechariah, filled with holy spirit, sang this canticle, |
| 68正如他藉歷代諸聖先知的口所說過的， | 68"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has come and redeemed his people. |
| 69拯救我們脫離敵人和仇恨我們者的手。 | 69He has raised up for us a victorious Savior in the house of David his servant, |
| 70他向我們的祖先施行仁慈，記憶起他自己的神聖盟約， | 70as he promised through his prophets of old, |
| 71就是他向我們的祖宗亞巴郎所宣述的誓詞， | 71salvation from our enemies and from the hand of our foes. |
| 72恩賜我們從敵人手中被救出以後，無恐無懼， | 72He has shown mercy to our fathers and remembered his holy covenant, |
| 73一生一世在他面前，以聖善和正義事奉他。 | 73the oath he swore to Abraham, our father, |
| 74至於你，小孩，你要稱為至高者的先知，因你要走在上主前面，為他預備道路， | 74to deliver us from the enemy, |
| 75為使他的百姓認識救恩，以獲得他們罪惡的寬宥： | 75that we might serve him fearlessly as a holy and righteous people all the days of our lives. |
| 76這是出於我們天主的慈懷，使旭日由高天向我們照耀， | 76And you, my child, shall be called prophet of the Most High, for you shall go before the Lord to prepare the way for him |
| 77為光照那坐在黑暗和死影中的人，並引我們的腳步，走向和平的道路。」 | 77and enable his people to know of their salvation when he comes to forgive their sins. |
| 78這小孩漸漸長大，心神堅強。他住在荒野中，直到他在以色列人前出現的日期。 | 78This is the work of the mercy of our God, who comes from on high as a rising sun |
| 79 | 79shining on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, and guiding our feet into the way of peace." |
| 80 | 80As the child grew up, he was seen to be strong in the Spirit; he lived in the desert till the day when he appeared openly in Israel. |
