| 1那時凱撒奧古斯都出了一道上諭，叫天下的人都要登記： | 1At that time the emperor issued a decree for a census of the whole empire to be taken. |
| 2這是在季黎諾作敘利亞總督時，初次行的登記。 | 2This first census was taken while Quirinus was governor of Syria. |
| 3於是，眾人各去本城登記。 | 3Everyone had to be registered in his own town. So everyone set out for his own city; |
| 4若瑟因為是達味家族的人，也從加里肋亞納匝肋城，上猶大名叫白冷的達味城去， | 4Joseph too set out from Nazareth of Galilee. As he belonged to the family of David, being a descendant of his, he went to Judea to David's town of Bethlehem |
| 5好同自己已懷孕的聘妻瑪利亞去登記。 | 5to be registered with Mary, his wife, who was with child. |
| 6他們在那裏的時候，她分娩的日期滿了， | 6They were in Bethlehem when the time came for her to have her child, |
| 7便生了她的頭胎男兒，用襁褓裏起，放在馬槽裏，因為在客棧中為他們沒有地方。 | 7and she gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no place for them in the living room. |
| 8在那地區有些牧人露宿，守夜看守羊群。 | 8There were shepherds camping in the countryside, taking turns to watch over their flocks by night. |
| 9有上主的一個天使站在他們身邊，上主的光耀環照着他們，他們便非常害怕。 | 9Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to them, with the Glory of the Lord shining around them. As they were terrified, |
| 10天使向他們說：「不要害怕！看！我給你們報告一個為全民族的大喜訊： | 10the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid; I am here to give you good news, great joy for all the people. |
| 11今天在達味城中，為你們誕生了一位救世者，他是主默西亞。 | 11Today a Savior has been born to you in David's town; he is the Messiah and the Lord. |
| 12這是給你們的記號：你們將要看見一個嬰兒，裏着襁褓，躺在馬槽裏。」 | 12Let this be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." |
| 13忽有一大隊天軍，同那天使一起讚頌天主說： | 13Suddenly the angel was surrounded by many more heavenly spirits, praising God and saying, |
| 14「天主受享光榮於高天，主愛的人在世享平安！」 | 14"Glory to God in the highest; peace on earth for God is blessing humankind." |
| 15眾天使離開他們往天上去了以後，牧人們就彼此說：「我們且往白冷去，看看上主報告給我們所發生的事。」 | 15When the angels had left them and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go as far as Bethlehem and see what the Lord has made known to us." |
| 16他們急忙去了，找到了瑪利亞和若瑟，並那躺在馬槽中的嬰兒。 | 16So they came hurriedly and found Mary and Joseph with the baby lying in the manger. |
| 17他們看見以後，就把天使對他們論這小孩所說的事，傳揚開了， | 17On seeing this they related what they had been told about the child, |
| 18凡聽見的人都驚訝牧人向他們所說的事。 | 18and all were astonished on hearing the shepherds. |
| 19瑪利亞卻把這一切事默存在自己心中，反覆思想。 | 19As for Mary, she treasured all these messages and continually pondered over them. |
| 20牧人們為了他們所聽見和看見的一切，正如天使向他們說的一樣，就光榮讚美天主回去了。 | 20The shepherds then returned giving glory and praise to God for all they had heard and seen, just as the angels had told them. |
| 21滿了八天，孩子應受割損，遂給他起名叫耶穌，這是他降孕母胎前，由天使所起的。 | 21On the eighth day the circumcision of the baby had to be performed; he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. |
| 22按梅瑟的法律，一滿了他們取潔的日期，他們便帶着孩子上耶路撒冷去獻給上主， | 22When the day came for the purification according to the law of Moses, they brought the baby up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, |
| 23就如上主的法律上所記載的：「凡開胎首生的男性，應祝聖於上主。」 | 23as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to God. |
| 24並該照上主法律上所吩咐的，獻上祭物：一對斑鳩或兩隻鶵鴿。 | 24And they offered a sacrifice as ordered in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. |
| 25那時，在耶路撒冷有一個人，名叫西默盎。這人正義虔誠，期待着以色列的安慰，而且聖神也在他身上。 | 25There lived in Jerusalem at this time a very upright and devout man named Simeon; the Holy Spirit was in him. He looked forward to the time when the Lord would comfort Israel, |
| 26他曾蒙聖神啟示：自己在未看見上主的受傅者以前，決見不到死亡。 | 26and he had been assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Messiah of the Lord. |
| 27他因聖神的感動，進了聖殿；那時，抱着嬰孩耶穌的父母正進來，要按着法律的慣例為他行禮。 | 27So he was led into the Temple by the Holy Spirit at the time the parents brought the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law. |
| 28西默盎就雙臂接過他來，讚美天主說： | 28Simeon took the child in his arms and blessed God, saying, |
| 29「主啊！現在可照你的話，放你的僕人平安去了！ | 29"Now, O Lord, you can dismiss your servant in peace, for you have fulfilled your word |
| 30因為我親眼看見了你的救援， | 30and my eyes have seen your salvation, |
| 31即你在萬民之前早準備好的： | 31which you display for all the people to see. |
| 32為作啟示異邦的光明，你百姓以色列的榮耀。」 | 32Here is the light you will reveal to the nations and the glory of your people Israel." |
| 33他的父親和母親就驚異他關於耶穌所說的這些話。 | 33His father and mother wondered at what was said about the child. |
| 34西默盎祝福了他們，又向他的母親瑪利亞說：「看，這孩子已被立定，為使以色列中許多人跌倒和復起，並成為反對的記號── | 34Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, "See him; he will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, |
| 35至於你，要有一把利劍剌透你的心靈──為叫許多人心中的思念顯露出來。」 | 35while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light." |
| 36又有一位女先知亞納，是阿協爾支派法奴耳的女兒，已上了年紀。她出閣後，與丈夫同居了七年， | 36There was also a prophetess named Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. After leaving her father's home, she had been seven years with her husband, and since then she had been continually about the Temple, serving God as a widow night and day in fasting and prayer. |
| 37以後就守寡，直到八十四歲。她齋戒祈禱，晝夜事奉天主，總不離開聖殿。 | 37She was now eighty-four. |
| 38正在那時刻，她也前來稱謝天主，並向一切希望耶路撒冷得救贖的人，講論這孩子。 | 38Coming up at that time, she gave praise to God and spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. |
| 39他們按着上主的法律，行完了一切，便返回了加里肋亞，他們的本城納匝肋。 | 39When the parents had fulfilled all that was required by the law of the Lord, they returned to their town, Nazareth in Galilee. |
| 40孩子漸漸長大而強壯，充滿智慧，天主的恩寵常在他身上。 | 40There the child grew in stature and strength and was filled with wisdom: the grace of God was upon him. |
| 41他的父母每年逾越節往耶路撒冷去。 | 41Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, as was customary. |
| 42他到了十二歲時，他們又照節日的慣例上去了。 | 42And when Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them according to the custom for this feast. |
| 43過完了節日，他們回去的時候，孩童耶穌卻留在耶路撒冷，他的父母並未發覺。 | 43After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem and his parents did not know it. |
| 44他們只以為他在同行的人中間，遂走了一天的路程；以後，就在親戚和相識的人中尋找他。 | 44They thought he was in the company and after walking the whole day they looked for him among their relatives and friends. |
| 45既找不着，便折回耶路撒冷找他。 | 45As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem searching for him, |
| 46過了三天，纔在聖殿裏找到了他。他正坐在經師中，聆聽他們，也詢問他們。 | 46and on the third day they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. |
| 47凡聽見他的人，對他的智慧和對答，都驚奇不止。 | 47And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers. |
| 48他們一看見他，便大為驚異，他的母親就向他說：「孩子，為什麼你這樣對待我們？看，你的父親和我，一直痛苦的找你。」 | 48His parents were very surprised when they saw him and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for you." |
| 49耶穌對他們說：「你們為什麼尋找我？你們不知道我必須在我父親那裏嗎？」 | 49Then he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Do you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" |
| 50但是，他們不明白他對他們所說的話。 | 50But they did not understand this answer. |
| 51他就同他們下去，來到納匝肋，屬他們管轄。他的母親把這一切默存在心中。 | 51Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and he continued to be subject to them. As for his mother, she kept all these things in her heart. |
| 52耶穌在智慧和身量上，並在天主和人前的恩愛上，漸漸地增長。 | 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and age, and in divine and human favor. |
