¹那時，洗者若翰出現在猶太曠野宣講，	¹In the course of time John the Baptist appeared in the desert of Judea and began to proclaim his message,
²說：「你們悔改罷！因為天國臨近了。」	²"Change your ways, the Kingdom of heaven is now at hand!"
³這人便是那藉依撒意亞先知所預言的：「在曠野裏有呼號者的聲音：你們該當預備上主的道路，修直他的途徑。」	³It was about him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said, A voice is shouting in the desert: prepare a way for the Lord; make his paths straight.
⁴這若翰穿着駱駝毛做的衣服，腰間束着皮帶，他的食物是蝗蟲和野蜜。	⁴John had a leather garment around his waist and wore a cloak of camel's hair; his food was locusts and wild honey.
⁵那時，耶路撒冷、全猶太以及全約但河一帶的人，都出來到他那裏去，	⁵People came to him from Jerusalem, from all Judea and from the whole Jordan valley,
⁶承認自己的罪過，並在約但河裏受他的洗。	⁶and they were baptized by him in the Jordan as they confessed their sins.
⁷他見到許多法利塞人和撒杜塞人來受他的洗，就對他們說：「毒蛇的種類！誰指教你們逃避那即將來臨的忿怒？	⁷When he saw several Pharisees and Sadduccees coming to where he baptized, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who told you that you could escape the punishment that is to come?
⁸那麼，就結與悔改相稱的果實罷！	⁸Let it be seen that you are serious in your conversion,
⁹你們自己不要思念說：我們有亞巴郎為父。我給你們說：天主能從這些石頭給亞巴郎興起子孫來。	⁹and do not think: We have Abraham for our father. I tell you that God can raise children for Abraham from these stones!
¹⁰斧子已放在樹根上了，凡不結好果子的樹，必被砍倒，投入火中。	¹⁰The axe is already laid to the roots of the trees; any tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire.
¹¹我固然用水洗你們，為使你們悔改；但在我以後要來的那一位，比我更強，我連提他的鞋也不配，他要以聖神及火洗你們。	¹¹I baptize you in water for a change of heart, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than me; indeed I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
¹²他的簸箕已在他手中，他要揚淨自己的禾場，將他的麥粒收入倉內，至於糠粃，卻要用不滅的火焚燒。」	¹²He has the winnowing fan in his hand and he will clear out his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn in everlasting fire."
¹³那時，耶穌由加里肋亞來到約但河若翰那裏，為受他的洗；	¹³At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
¹⁴但若翰想要阻止他說：「我本來需要受你的洗，而你卻來就我嗎？」	¹⁴But John tried to prevent him, and said, "How is it you come to me: I should be baptized by you!"
¹⁵耶穌回答他說：「你暫且容許罷！因為我們應當這樣，以完成全義。」於是若翰就容許了他。	¹⁵But Jesus answered him, "Let it be like that for now that we may fulfill the right order." John agreed.
¹⁶耶穌受洗後，立時從水裏上來，忽然天為他開了。他看見天主聖神有如鴿子降下，來到他上面；	¹⁶As soon as he was baptized, Jesus came up from the water. At once, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God come down like a dove and rest upon him.
¹⁷又有聲音由天上說：「這是我的愛子，我所喜悅的。」	¹⁷At the same time a voice from heaven was heard, "This is my Son, the Beloved; he is my Chosen One."
