| 1當以色列人住在史廷的時候，民眾開始與摩阿布女子行淫。 | 1Israel settled at Shittim and the men began to enjoy themselves with the Moabite women and to have sex with them. |
| 2這些女子請民眾參與她們神祇的祭祀；民眾吃了供物，且朝拜了她們的神祇。 | 2These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods. There the people ate and bowed down before their gods. |
| 3這樣以色列人就歸依了巴耳培敖爾，上主因此對以色列大發忿怒。 | 3The Israelites prostituted themselves to the god of Peor, so Yahweh's anger flared against them. |
| 4上主對梅瑟說：「你捉住民眾中所有的罪魁，在光天化日之下，為上主將他們懸掛起來，好挽回上主對以色列的怒火。」 | 4He said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of these people and hang them in broad daylight before Yahweh, so that his fierce anger may turn away from Israel." |
| 5梅瑟就吩咐以色列的各首長說：「你們每人應將自己家中歸依巴耳培敖爾的人殺死。」 | 5So Moses told the Israelite judges, "Each of you shall slay any of your men who have joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor." |
| 6看，當梅瑟和以色列子民全會眾都在會幕門口流淚痛哭時，以色列子民中正有一人，當着他們的面，帶了一個米德楊女人到他兄弟那裏去。 | 6Then a man, an Israelite, came back bringing a Midianite woman to his family in view of Moses and the Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. |
| 7大司祭亞郎的兒子厄肋阿匝爾的兒子丕乃哈斯一見，就由會眾中起來，順手拿了一把長槍， | 7When Phinehas, a son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand |
| 8跟那以色列人進入臥室內，刺穿了他們兩人，即那以色列人和那女人的肚腹；以色列子民間的災禍遂止息了。 | 8and followed the Israelite into the tent. There he drove the spear through both the man and the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was checked |
| 9在這次災禍內，死去了二萬四千人。 | 9but those who had already died numbered twenty-four thousand. |
| 10上主於是訓示梅瑟說； | 10Yahweh spoke to Moses, |
| 11「大司祭亞郎的孫子，厄肋阿匝爾的兒子丕乃哈斯，由以色列子民身上挽回了我的忿怒，因為他在他們中，懷着與我同樣的嫉邪的心，因此我沒有因我嫉邪之心消滅了以色列子民。 | 11"Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned away the blows of my anger from the sons of Israel, zealous as he was for me; he has defended my honor among you. Because of this, I did not feel zealous for my honor so that I should destroy the people of Israel. |
| 12為此你應聲明：看，我與他結平安的盟約。 | 12Therefore tell him that I am making with him a covenant of friendship. |
| 13這為他和他的後裔，是永享司祭品位的盟約，因為他為了自己天主的原故，嫉惡如仇，賠補了以色列子民的罪。」 | 13I grant to him and his descendants that they be my priests forever, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel." |
| 14那與米德楊女人一同被殺的以色列人，名叫齊默黎，是撒路的兒子，西默盎家族的族長。 | 14The Israelite slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri, son of Salu, a leader of a Simeonite family. |
| 15那被殺的米德楊女人，名叫苛次彼，是族爾的女兒；族爾是米德楊族一部落的酋長。 | 15And the name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. |
| 16事後，上主訓示梅瑟說： | 16Yahweh said to Moses, |
| 17「你應圍攻米德楊人，打擊他們， | 17"Attack the Midianites and crush them, |
| 18因為他們用詭計打擊了你們，就是在培敖爾的事上，並在他們的姊妹，米德楊酋長的女兒苛次彼的事上，欺騸了你們。──這女子已在培敖爾的事上，在災禍之日被殺。」 | 18for they have been your enemies, deceiving you with regard to Peor and with regard to Cozbi, their kinswoman, daughter of a Midianite leader, who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor." After the plague, it happened that... |
