| 1阿哈布將厄里亞所作的一切，以及他如何刀斬眾先知的事，全告訴了依則貝耳。 |
1Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done--that he had put all the prophets to the sword. |
| 2依則貝耳就派使者去對厄里亞說：「明天這個時候，如果我不使你的性命如同那些先知一樣，願眾神明嚴厲，且加倍嚴厲地懲罰我！」 |
2Jezebel then sent a messenger to Elijah and said, "May the gods do thus and so to me if by this time tomorrow I have not done with your life what was done to each of them." |
| 3厄里亞害了怕，遂起身逃命，到了猶大境內的貝爾舍巴，叫他的僕人留在那裏， |
3Elijah was afraid and fled for his life, going to Beer-sheba of Judah. He left his servant there |
| 4自己卻進入曠野，走了一天的路，來到一棵杜松樹下，坐下求死說：「上主啊！現在已經夠了！收去我的性命罷！因為我並不如我的祖先好。」 |
4and went a day's journey into the desert, until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death: "This is enough, O LORD! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers." |
| 5以後，就躺在那棵杜松樹下，睡着了；忽然，有位天使拍醒他，對他說：「起來，吃罷！」 |
5He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. |
| 6他看了看，見頭旁有一塊用炭火烤熟的餅和一罐水；他吃了喝了，又躺下睡了。 |
6He looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, |
| 7上主的使者第二次又來拍醒他說：「起來，吃罷！因為你還有一段很遠的路。」 |
7but the angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" |
| 8他就起來，吃了喝了，賴那食物的力量，走了四十天四十夜，一直到了天主的山曷勒布。 |
8He got up, ate and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. |
| 9他來到那裏，進了一個山洞，在那裏過夜；有上主的話傳於他說：「厄里亞，你在這裏做什麼？」 |
9There he came to a cave, where he took shelter. But the word of the LORD came to him, "Why are you here, Elijah?" |
| 10厄里亞答說：「我為上主萬軍的天主憂心如焚，因為以色列子民背棄了你的盟約，毀壞了你的祭壇，刀斬了你的先知，只剩下了我一個，他們還要奪取我的性命！」 |
10He answered: "I have been most zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts, but the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to the sword. I alone am left, and they seek to take my life." |
| 11上主吩咐他說：「你出來，站在山上，立在上主面前。」那時，上主正從那裏經過，在上主前面，暴風大作，裂山碎石，但是，上主卻不在風暴中；風以後有地震，但是上主亦不在地震中； |
11 Then the LORD said, "Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by." A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD--but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake--but the LORD was not in the earthquake. |
| 12地震以後有烈火，但是上主仍不在火中；烈火以後，有輕微細弱的風聲。 |
12After the earthquake there was fire--but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. |
| 13厄里亞一聽見這聲音，即用外衣蒙住臉出來，站在洞口。遂有聲音對他說：「厄里亞，你在這裏做什麼？」 |
13When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, "Elijah, why are you here?" |
| 14他答說：「我為上主萬軍的天主憂心如焚，因為以色列子民背棄了你的盟約，毀壞了你的祭壇，刀斬了你的先知，只剩下了我一個，他們還要奪取我的性命！」 |
14He replied, "I have been most zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. But the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to the sword. I alone am left, and they seek to take my life." |
| 15上主對厄里亞說：「你回去，仍取道曠野，往大馬士革去，到了那裏，給哈匝耳傅油，立他為阿蘭王。 |
15 "Go, take the road back to the desert near Damascus," the LORD said to him. "When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king of Aram. |
| 16去給尼默史的孫子耶胡傅油，立他為以色列王；再去給阿貝耳默曷拉人沙法特的兒子厄里叟傅油，立他接替你為先知； |
16Then you shall anoint Jehu, son of Nimshi, as king of Israel, and Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, as prophet to succeed you. |
| 17將來躲過哈匝耳的刀的，必為耶胡所殺；躲過耶胡的刀的，必為厄里叟所殺。 |
17If anyone escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill him. If he escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill him. |
| 18然而，在以色列我要為我自己留下七千人；他們全是從未向巴耳屈過膝，未與巴耳親過嘴的人。 |
18Yet I will leave seven thousand men in Israel--all those who have not knelt to Baal or kissed him." |
| 19厄里亞於是從那裏起身，去找沙法特的兒子厄里叟。他正在耕田，在他面前有十二對牛，他自己趕着第十二對；厄里亞走過他身邊，將自己的外衣披在他身上。 |
19 Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. |
| 20厄里叟丟下那些牛，追上厄里亞說：「請你讓我先回去和我的父母吻別，然後來跟隨你。」厄里亞對他說：「你去罷！要再回來！因為我應為你作的，已經作了。」 |
20Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Please, let me kiss my father and mother good-bye, and I will follow you." "Go back!" Elijah answered. "Have I done anything to you?" |
| 21厄里叟離開了厄里亞，回來牽出一對牛宰殺了，用駕馭牛的用具煮熟，分給眾人吃；然後他便起身跟隨厄里亞，作了他的侍從。 |
21Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant. |
