Jonah |
| 1約納因此很不高興，遂發起怒來。 |
1 But this was greatly displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. |
| 2他懇求天主說：「上主，當我還在故鄉時，我豈不是已想到這事？所以，我預先要逃往塔爾史士去，因為我知道你是慈悲的，寬仁的天主；是緩於發怒，富於慈愛，憐憫而不願降災禍的天主。 |
2"I beseech you, LORD," he prayed, "is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I fled at first to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe to punish. |
| 3上主，現在，求你從我身上收去我的性命，因為，我死了比活着還好！」 |
3And now, LORD, please take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live." |
| 4上主說：「你的忿怒合理嗎？」 |
4But the LORD asked, "Have you reason to be angry?" |
| 5約納出了城，坐在城東，在那裏為自己搭了一個棚，坐在棚蔭下，要看看那城究竟要發生什麼事。 |
5Jonah then left the city for a place to the east of it, where he built himself a hut and waited under it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city. |
| 6上主天主安排了一株蓖麻，使它長的高過約納，為他的頭遮蔭，消除他的煩惱。約納很喜愛這株蓖麻。 |
6 And when the LORD God provided a gourd plant, that grew up over Jonah's head, giving shade that relieved him of any discomfort, Jonah was very happy over the plant. |
| 7但第二天曙光升起時，天主安排了一個蟲子咬死蓖麻，蓖麻便枯萎了。 |
7But the next morning at dawn God sent a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered. |
| 8當太陽升起時，天主又安排了炎熱的東風，太陽射在約納頭上，使他無法忍受，遂要求死去，說：「我死了比活着還好！」 |
8And when the sun arose, God sent a burning east wind; and the sun beat upon Jonah's head till he became faint. Then he asked for death, saying, "I would be better off dead than alive." |
| 9天主向約納說：「你為這株蓖麻發怒合理嗎？」他回答說：「我發怒以至於死，是合理的！」 |
9But God said to Jonah, "Have you reason to be angry over the plant?" "I have reason to be angry," Jonah answered, "angry enough to die." |
| 10上主說：「你為這株蓖麻，並沒有勞過力，也沒有使它生長，還憐惜它：它不過是一夜生出，一夜死去的植物； |
10 Then the LORD said, "You are concerned over the plant which cost you no labor and which you did not raise; it came up in one night and in one night it perished. |
| 11對尼尼微這座大城，其中有十二萬多不能分辨自己左右手的人，且有許多牲畜，我就不該憐惜他們麼？」 |
11And should I not be concerned over Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot distinguish their right hand from their left, not to mention the many cattle?" |
