| 1以色列的兒子們，各帶了家眷，同雅各伯來到埃及；他們的名字記載如下： |
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who, accompanied by their households, migrated with Jacob into Egypt: |
| 2勒烏本、西默盎、肋未和猶大， |
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; |
| 3依撒加爾，則步隆和本雅明， |
3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; |
| 4丹和納斐塔里，加得和阿協爾。 |
4Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. |
| 5他們全是雅各伯所生的，一共七十人；若瑟那時已經在埃及。 |
5 The total number of the direct descendants of Jacob was seventy. Joseph was already in Egypt. |
| 6若瑟和他的眾兄弟，以及這一代人死了以後， |
6Now Joseph and all his brothers and that whole generation died. |
| 7以色列的子孫生育繁殖，數目增多，極其強盛，佈滿了那地。 |
7But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific. They became so numerous and strong that the land was filled with them. |
| 8有位不認識若瑟的新王興起，統治了埃及。 |
8Then a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph , came to power in Egypt. |
| 9他對自己的人民說：「看，以色列子民，比我們又多又強。 |
9He said to his subjects, "Look how numerous and powerful the Israelite people are growing, more so than we ourselves! |
| 10來，我們要用智謀對付他們，免得他們繁盛起來，一遇戰爭，就去與我們的敵人聯合，攻擊我們，然後離開此地。」 |
10Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase; otherwise, in time of war they too may join our enemies to fight against us, and so leave our country." |
| 11於是派定督工管制他們，以苦役壓迫他們，叫他們給法郎建築丕通和辣默色斯兩座貯貨城。 |
11 Accordingly, taskmasters were set over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. Thus they had to build for Pharaoh the supply cities of Pithom and Raamses. |
| 12但是越壓迫他們，他們越增多，也越繁殖，以至埃及人都怕以色列子民。 |
12Yet the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread. The Egyptians, then, dreaded the Israelites |
| 13於是埃及人更嚴厲地強迫以色列子民做苦工， |
13and reduced them to cruel slavery, |
| 14強迫他們作和泥做磚的苦工，田間的一切勞工，以及種種苦工，使他們的生活十分痛苦。 |
14 making life bitter for them with hard work in mortar and brick and all kinds of field work--the whole cruel fate of slaves. |
| 15埃及王又吩咐為希伯來女人接生的收生婆，一個名叫史斐辣，一個名叫普亞的說： |
15The king of Egypt told the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was called Shiphrah and the other Puah, |
| 16「你們為希伯來女人接生時，要看着她們臨盆！若是男孩，就殺死；若是女孩，就讓她活着。」 |
16 When you act as midwives for the Hebrew women and see them giving birth, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she may live." |
| 17但是收生婆敬畏天主，沒有照埃及王的吩咐去作，保留了男孩的性命。 |
17The midwives, however, feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt had ordered them, but let the boys live. |
| 18埃及王將收生婆召來，問她們說：「你們為什麼這樣做，竟叫男孩子活着呢？」 |
18So the king summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you acted thus, allowing the boys to live?" |
| 19收生婆回答法郎說：「希伯來女人與埃及女人不同，她們富有生機，收生婆還沒有來，她們已生產了。」 |
19The midwives answered Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They are robust and give birth before the midwife arrives." |
| 20天主遂恩待了收生婆。以色列子民更加增多起來，更加強盛。 |
20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives. The people, too, increased and grew strong. |
| 21因為收生婆敬畏天主，天主就使她們家門興旺。 |
21And because the midwives feared God, he built up families for them. |
| 22法郎於是訓令他的全體人民說：「凡希伯來人所生的男孩，你們應把他丟在尼羅河裏；凡是女孩，留她活着！」 |
22 Pharaoh then commanded all his subjects, "Throw into the river every boy that is born to the Hebrews, but you may let all the girls live." |
