| 1這些事以後，耶穌周遊於加里肋亞，而不願周遊於猶太，因為猶太人要圖謀殺害他。 |
1 After this, Jesus moved about within Galilee; but he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him. |
| 2那時，猶太人的慶節，帳棚節近了， |
2But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. |
| 3他的弟兄於是對他說：「你離開這裏，往猶太去罷！好叫你的門徒也看見你所行的事， |
3So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. |
| 4因為沒有人願意顯揚自己，而在暗地裏行事的；你既然行這些事，就該將你自己顯示給世界。」 |
4No one works in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you do these things, manifest yourself to the world." |
| 5原來，連他的弟兄們也不相信他。 |
5For his brothers did not believe in him. |
| 6耶穌回答說：「我的時候還沒有到，你們的時候卻常是現成的。 |
6 So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but the time is always right for you. |
| 7世界不會恨你們，卻是恨我，因為我指證它的行為是邪惡的。 |
7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify to it that its works are evil. |
| 8你們上去過節罷！我還不上去過這慶節，因為我的時候還沒有成熟。」 |
8You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled." |
| 9他說了這些話後，仍留在加里肋亞。 |
9After he had said this, he stayed on in Galilee. |
| 10但他的弟兄們上去過節以後，他也去了，但不是明顯的，而是暗中去的。 |
10But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but (as it were) in secret. |
| 11在慶節中，猶太人尋找他說：「那人在那裏呢？」 |
11The Jews were looking for him at the feast and saying, "Where is he?" |
| 12在群眾間對他發生了許多私議：有的說：「他是好人」；有的卻說：「不，他在煽惑民眾。」 |
12And there was considerable murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, "He is a good man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd." |
| 13但是，因為都怕猶太人，誰也不敢公開地講論他。 |
13Still, no one spoke openly about him because they were afraid of the Jews. |
| 14慶節已過了一半，耶穌就上聖殿裏去施教。 |
14 When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple area and began to teach. |
| 15猶太人都驚訝說：「這人沒有進過學，怎麼通曉經書呢？」 |
15 The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he know scripture without having studied?" |
| 16耶穌回答他們說：「我的教訓不是我的，而是派遣我來者的。 |
16Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me. |
| 17誰若願意承行他的旨意，就會認出這教訓，是出於天主或是由我自己而講的。 |
17Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own. |
| 18由自己而講的，是尋求自己的光榮；但誰若尋求派遣他來者的光榮，他便是誠實的，在他內沒有不義。 |
18Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him. |
| 19梅瑟不是曾給你們頒佈了法律嗎？但你們中卻沒有一人遵行法律；你們為什麼圖謀殺害我？」 |
19Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" |
| 20群眾回答說：「你附了魔；誰圖謀殺害你？」 |
20The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill you?" |
| 21耶穌回答說：「我作了一件事，你們就都奇怪。 |
21Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed |
| 22梅瑟曾給你們頒定了割損禮──其實並不是由梅瑟，而是由祖先開始的，因此，你們也在安息日給人行割損禮。 |
22because of it. Moses gave you circumcision--not that it came from Moses but rather from the patriarchs--and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. |
| 23若是在安息日，為滿全梅瑟的法律，人可受割損禮；那麼，為了我在安息日，使一個人完全恢復健康，你們就對我發怒麼？ |
23If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person well on a sabbath? |
| 24你們不要按照外表判斷，但要按照公義判斷。」 |
24Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly." |
| 25於是，有幾個耶路撒冷人說：「這不是人們所要圖謀殺害的人嗎？ |
25So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill? |
| 26看，他放膽地講論，而沒有人對他說什麼，難道首長們也確認這人就是默西亞嗎？ |
26And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah? |
| 27可是，我們知道這人是那裏的；然而，當默西亞來時，卻沒有人知道他是那裏的。」 |
27But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from." |
| 28於是耶穌在聖殿施教時，大聲喊說：「你們認識我，也知道我是那裏的；但我不是由我自己而來，而是那真實者派遣我來的，你們卻不認識他； |
28So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. |
| 29我認識他，因為我是出於他，是他派遣了我。」 |
29I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." |
| 30他們想捉往他，但沒有人向他下手，因為他的時辰還沒有到。 |
30So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. |
| 31群眾中有許多人信了他，且說：「默西亞來時，難道會行比這人更多的奇蹟嗎？」 |
31But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?" |
| 32法利塞人聽見群眾對耶穌這樣議論紛紛，司祭長和法利塞人便派遣差役去捉拿他。 |
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him. |
| 33於是耶穌說：「我和你們同在的時候不多了，我要回到派遣我來的那裏去。 |
33So Jesus said, "I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to the one who sent me. |
| 34你們要找我，卻找不着；而我所在的地方，你們也不能去。」 |
34You will look for me but not find (me), and where I am you cannot come." |
| 35猶太人便彼此說：「這人要往那裏去，我們找不着他呢？難道他要往散居在希臘民中的猶太人那裏去，教訓希臘人麼？ |
35So the Jews said to one another, "Where is he going that we will not find him? Surely he is not going to the dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Greeks, is he? |
| 36他所說：『你們要找我，卻找不着；我所在的地方，你們也不能去』的這話，是什麼意思？」 |
36What is the meaning of his saying, 'You will look for me and not find (me), and where I am you cannot come'?" |
| 37在慶節末日最隆重的那一天，耶穌站着大聲喊說：「誰若渴，到我這裏來喝罷！ |
37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. |
| 38凡信從我的，就如經上說：從他的心中要流出活水的江河。」 |
38Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'" |
| 39他說這話，是指那信仰他的人將要領受的聖神；聖神還沒有賜下，因為耶穌還沒有受到光榮。 |
39He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. |
| 40群眾中有些人聽了這些話，便說：「這人真是那位先知。」 |
40 Some in the crowd who heard these words said, "This is truly the Prophet." |
| 41另有些人說：「這人是默西亞。」但也有人說：「難道默西亞能來自加里肋亞嗎？ |
41Others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? |
| 42經上不是說：默西亞要出自達味的後裔，來自達味出生的村莊白冷嗎？」 |
42Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" |
| 43因此，為了耶穌的緣故，在群眾中起了紛爭。 |
43So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. |
| 44他們中有些人願捉拿他，但誰也沒有向他下手。 |
44Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. |
| 45差役回到司祭長和法利塞人那裏；司祭長和法利塞人問他們說：「為什麼你們沒有把他帶來？」 |
45So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" |
| 46差役回答說：「從來沒有一個人如此講話，像這人講話一樣。」 |
46The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one." |
| 47法利塞人遂向他們說：「難道你們也受了煽惑嗎？ |
47So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? |
| 48首長中或法利塞人中，難道有人信仰了他嗎？ |
48Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? |
| 49但是，這些不明白法律的群眾，是可詛咒的！」 |
49But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed." |
| 50他們中有一個，即先前曾來到耶穌那裏的尼苛德摩，遂向他們說： |
50Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, |
| 51「如果不先聽取人的口供，和查明他所作的事，難道我們的法律就許定他的罪麼？」 |
51"Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" |
| 52他們回答他說：「難道你也是出自加里肋亞麼？你去查考，你就能知道：從加里肋亞不會出先知的。」 |
52They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." |
| 53然後，他們就各自回家去了。 |
53 Then each went to his own house, |
