| 1大司祭遂問說：「真是這樣嗎？」 |
1Then the high priest asked, "Is this so?" |
| 2斯德望答說：「諸位仁人弟兄，諸位父老，請聽！當我們的祖先亞巴郎還在美索不達米亞，還未住在哈蘭以前，榮耀的天主曾顯現給他， |
2And he replied, "My brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was in Mesopotamia, before he had settled in Haran, |
| 3向他說：『你要離開你的故鄉和你的家族，往我所指示你的地方去！』 |
3and said to him, 'Go forth from your land and (from) your kinsfolk to the land that I will show you.' |
| 4那時，他遂離開了加色丁人的地方，住在哈蘭；他父親死後，天主又叫他從那裏遷移，來到你們現今所住的地方。 |
4So he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. And from there, after his father died, he made him migrate to this land where you now dwell. |
| 5在此地天主並沒有賜給他產業，連腳掌那麼大的地方也沒有給，卻應許了把此地賜給他和他以後的子孫做產業，雖然當時他還沒有兒子。 |
5Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but he did promise to give it to him and his descendants as a possession, even though he was childless. |
| 6天主還這樣說過：『他的子孫要僑居異地，人要奴役虐待他們，共四百年之久。』 |
6And God spoke thus, 'His descendants shall be aliens in a land not their own, where they shall be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years; |
| 7天主還說：『我要懲治那奴役他們的異民。此後，他們要出來，要在這地方恭敬我。』 |
7but I will bring judgment on the nation they serve,' God said, 'and after that they will come out and worship me in this place.' |
| 8天主又賜給了他割損的盟約；這樣，他生了依撒格後，第八天，給他行了割損禮。以後，依撒格生了雅各伯，雅各伯生了十二位宗祖。 |
8Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, as Isaac did Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs. |
| 9宗祖們嫉妒若瑟，把他賣到埃及，天主卻同他在一起， |
9"And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him |
| 10救他脫離了一切磨難，並在埃及王法郎面前使他得寵，有智慧，法郎就派他總理埃及和王家事務。 |
10and rescued him from all his afflictions. He granted him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, who put him in charge of Egypt and (of) his entire household. |
| 11後來在全埃及和客納罕發生了饑饉和大難，我們的祖先找不到食物。 |
11Then a famine and great affliction struck all Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestors could find no food; |
| 12雅各伯聽說在埃及有糧食，就打發了我們的祖先去，這是第一次。 |
12but when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there a first time. |
| 13第二次，若瑟被他的兄弟們認出來了。法郎也明悉了若瑟的親族。 |
13The second time, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh. |
| 14若瑟遂打發人請自己的父親和所有同族前來，共計七十五人。 |
14Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob, inviting him and his whole clan, seventy-five persons; |
| 15雅各伯下到了埃及，以後他和我們的祖先都死了； |
15and Jacob went down to Egypt. And he and our ancestors died |
| 16後來他們被運到舍根，埋葬在亞巴郎用銀價從哈摩爾的兒子在舍根所買的墳墓中。 |
16and were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor at Shechem. |
| 17天主向亞巴郎所應承的恩許的時期來近了，這民族在埃及就逐漸繁殖增多起來， |
17"When the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise that God pledged to Abraham, the people had increased and become very numerous in Egypt, |
| 18直到另一位不認識若瑟的君王起來統治埃及， |
18until another king who knew nothing of Joseph came to power (in Egypt). |
| 19他就用計謀壓迫我們的親族，虐待我們的祖先，叫他們拋棄自己的嬰孩，不容生存。 |
19He dealt shrewdly with our people and oppressed (our) ancestors by forcing them to expose their infants, that they might not survive. |
| 20就在那時期梅瑟誕生了，他為天主所喜愛；在父親家中養育了三個月。 |
20At this time Moses was born, and he was extremely beautiful. For three months he was nursed in his father's house; |
| 21他被拋棄後，法郎的女兒卻將他拾去，當自己的兒子養育。 |
21but when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. |
| 22梅瑟學習了埃及人的各種智慧；他講話辦事，都有才幹。 |
22Moses was educated (in) all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his words and deeds. |
| 23當他滿了四十歲的時候，他心中起了看望自己的弟兄──以色列子民的願望。 |
23"When he was forty years old, he decided to visit his kinsfolk, the Israelites. |
| 24他看見一個人受欺壓，就加以衛護，為受欺負的人報仇，打死了那個埃及人。 |
24When he saw one of them treated unjustly, he defended and avenged the oppressed man by striking down the Egyptian. |
| 25他以為自己的弟兄明白天主要藉他的手拯救他們，但他們卻不明白。 |
25He assumed (his) kinsfolk would understand that God was offering them deliverance through him, but they did not understand. |
| 26第二天，他看見他們打架，就勸他們和解說：同仁！你們原是弟兄，為什麼彼此傷害呢？ |
26The next day he appeared to them as they were fighting and tried to reconcile them peacefully, saying, 'Men, you are brothers. Why are you harming one another?' |
| 27那欺壓近人的推開他說：誰立了你做我們的首領和判官？ |
27Then the one who was harming his neighbor pushed him aside, saying, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge over us? |
| 28難道你願意殺死我，就像昨天你殺死了那埃及人一樣嗎？ |
28Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' |
| 29梅瑟因這句話，便逃跑了，在米德楊地方作客，在那裏生了兩個兒子。 |
29Moses fled when he heard this and settled as an alien in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. |
| 30過了四十年，在西乃山的曠野裏，有一位使者在荊棘叢火燄中顯現給他。 |
30"Forty years later, an angel appeared to him in the desert near Mount Sinai in the flame of a burning bush. |
| 31梅瑟一見，就奇怪這異像；他正要前去觀察，有上主的聲音說： |
31When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look at it, the voice of the Lord came, |
| 32『我是你祖先的天主，即亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯的天主。』梅瑟就戰慄起來，不敢前去觀察。 |
32'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.' Then Moses, trembling, did not dare to look at it. |
| 33上主向他說：『將你腳上的鞋脫下！因為你站的地方是聖地。 |
33But the Lord said to him, 'Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. |
| 34我看見了我百姓在埃及的苦楚，也聽見了他們的哀歎，遂下來拯救他們。現在你來，我要打發你到埃及去。』 |
34I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Come now, I will send you to Egypt.' |
| 35這梅瑟就是他們曾否定說：『誰立了你做我們的首領和判官』的，天主卻藉着在荊棘中顯現的使者的手，打發他做首領和救贖者。 |
35This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who appointed you ruler and judge?' God sent as (both) ruler and deliverer, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. |
| 36就是他領了他們出來，在埃及，在紅海，在曠野四十年之久，行了奇蹟異事。 |
36This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the desert for forty years. |
| 37這人就是那給以色列子民說：『天主要從你們弟兄們中間，給你們興起一位像我似的先知』的梅瑟。 |
37It was this Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you, from among your own kinsfolk, a prophet like me.' |
| 38就是他在曠野時，在會眾中，立在西乃山給他說話的使者和我們的祖先之間，領受生命的話，傳授給我們。 |
38It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us. |
| 39我們的祖先卻不肯聽從他，反而拒絕他；他們的心已轉向埃及， |
39"Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him; instead, they pushed him aside and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, |
| 40遂向亞郎說：『請給我們製造神像，在我們面前引路，因為領我們出埃及地的這位梅瑟，我們不知道他遭遇了什麼事。』 |
40saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods who will be our leaders. As for that Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.' |
| 41他們就在那幾天製造了一個牛犢，向那偶像奉獻祭品，並因他們手中的作品而歡樂。 |
41So they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and reveled in the works of their hands. |
| 42於是天主轉過身去，任憑他們恭敬天上的軍旅，就如在《先知書》上所載的：『以色列家！你們四十年在曠野中，何嘗向我奉獻過犧牲和祭品？ |
42Then God turned and handed them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert, O house of Israel? |
| 43你們抬着摩肋客的帳幕和楞番神的星辰，為朝拜你們所製造的偶像。為此，我要把你們遷徙到巴比倫那邊去。』 |
43No, you took up the tent of Moloch and the star of (your) god Rephan, the images that you made to worship. So I shall take you into exile beyond Babylon.' |
| 44我們的祖先在曠野中有一個作證的帳幕，這帳幕就是天主吩咐梅瑟，按他所指示的式樣製造的。 |
44"Our ancestors had the tent of testimony in the desert just as the One who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern he had seen. |
| 45我們的祖先相繼承受了它；當天主把異民從我們祖先的面前趕走之後，他們便同若蘇厄將此帳幕運到繼承為業之地，直到達味的時日。 |
45Our ancestors who inherited it brought it with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out from before our ancestors, up to the time of David, |
| 46達味在天主面前獲得了寵愛，就懇求要為雅各伯的天主尋找一個住所； |
46who found favor in the sight of God and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob. |
| 47撒羅滿便為天主建築了殿宇。 |
47But Solomon built a house for him. |
| 48但至高者本不住在人手所建造的殿宇中：正如先知說： |
48Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: |
| 49『天是我的寶座，地是我的腳凳。你們要為我建築什麼樣的殿宇？──上主說──或者我安息的地方是怎樣的呢？ |
49'The heavens are my throne, the earth is my footstool. What kind of house can you build for me? says the Lord, or what is to be my resting place? |
| 50這一切不是我的手所造的嗎？』 |
50Did not my hand make all these things?' |
| 51執拗和心耳未受割損的人啊！你們時常反抗聖神，你們的祖先怎樣，你們也怎樣。 |
51"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors. |
| 52那一位先知，你們的祖先沒有迫害過﹖他們殺害了那些預言義人來臨的人，現在你們都成了那義人的出賣者和兇手。 |
52Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. |
| 53你們這些人接受了藉天使所傳佈的法律，卻不遵守。」 |
53You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it." |
| 54他們一聽這些話，怒從心起，向他咬牙切齒。 |
54When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. |
| 55斯德望卻充滿了聖神，注目向天，看見天主的光榮，並看見耶穌站在天主右邊， |
55But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, |
| 56遂說道：「看，我見天開了，並見人子站在天主右邊。」 |
56and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." |
| 57他們都大聲亂嚷，掩着自己的耳朵一致向他撲去， |
57But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. |
| 58把他拉出城外，用石頭砸死了。證人脫下自己的衣服放在名叫掃祿的青年人腳前。 |
58They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. |
| 59當他們用石頭砸斯德望的時候，他祈求說：「主耶穌！接我的靈魂去罷！」 |
59As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." |
| 60遂屈膝跪下，大聲呼喊說：「主，不要向他們算這罪債！」說了這話，就死了。 |
60Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he said this, he fell asleep. |
