¹撒慕尔年老的时候，立了他的两个儿子作以色列的民长。	¹When Samuel grew old, he made his sons judges over Israel.
²长子名叫约厄耳，次子名叫阿彼雅，同在贝尔舍巴作民长。	²His elder son was Joel and the second was Abijah, and both of them were judges in Beersheba.
³但是他这两个儿子不走他所走的路，却贪图厚利，接受贿赂，歪曲正理。	³But they were not like their father; they had their vested interests, taking bribes and perverting justice.
⁴以色列众长老便联合起来，往辣玛去见撒慕尔，	⁴Because of this, all the chiefs of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel in Ramah.
⁵对他说：「看，你已经老了，你的儿子们不走你所走的路。如今请你给我们立一位君王治理我们，如同各国一样。」	⁵They said to him, "You are already old and your sons are not following your ways. Give us a king to rule over us as in all the other nations."
⁶撒慕尔听到他们要求说：「请给我们立一位君王治理我们」，大为不悦，便去祈求上主。	⁶Samuel was very displeased with what they said, "Give us a king to rule us," and he prayed to Yahweh.
⁷上主对撒慕尔说：「凡民众向你所说的话，你都要听从，因为他们不是抛弃你，而是抛弃我作他们的君王。	⁷And Yahweh told him, "Give to this people all that they ask for.
⁸自从我领他们出离埃及直到今日，凡他们做的，无非是抛弃我而事奉别的神；他们现在也这样来对待你。	⁸They are not rejecting you but they have rejected me as their king. They are now doing to you what they did to me from the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, forsaking me and serving other gods.
⁹好罢！你就听从他们的要求，但必须清楚警告他们，要他们明了那统治他们的君王所享有的权利。」	⁹Nevertheless, listen to them, and give them a serious warning. Tell them how they will be treated by their king."
¹⁰撒慕尔把上主的一切话，转告给那向他要求君王的人民，	¹⁰So Samuel answered those who were asking him for a king,
¹¹说：「那要统治你们的君王所享有的权利是：他要征用你们的儿子，去充当车夫马夫，在他的车前奔走；	¹¹and he told them all that Yahweh said to him, "Look, these will be the demands of your king: he will take your sons and assign them to his chariot and his horses and have them run before his chariot.
¹²委派他们做千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长；令他们耕种他的田地，收割他的庄稼，替他制造作战的武器和战车的用具；	¹²Some he will assign as commanders over a thousand men and commanders over fifty. Others will till his ground and reap his harvest, make his implements of war and the equipment for his chariots.
¹³要征用你们的女儿为他配制香料，烹调食物；	¹³He will take your daughters as well to prepare perfumes, to cook and to bake for him.
¹⁴要拿你们最好的庄田、葡萄园和橄榄林，赐给他的臣仆；	¹⁴He will take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive orchards and give them to his officials.
¹⁵征收你们庄田和葡萄园出产的十分之一，赐给他的宦官和臣仆；	¹⁵He will take a tenth portion of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants.
¹⁶使用你们的仆婢和你们最好的牛驴，替他作工；	¹⁶He will take your menservants and maidservants, the best of your cattle and your asses for his own work.
¹⁷征收你们的羊群十分之一；至于你们自己，还应作他的奴隶。	¹⁷He will take the tenth of your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves.
¹⁸到那一天，你们必要因你们所选的君王发出哀号；但那一天，上主也不理你们了。」	¹⁸When these things happen, you will cry out because of the king whom you have chosen for yourselves. But by then, Yahweh will not answer you."
¹⁹但是，人民不愿听从撒慕尔的话，却对他说：「不！我们非要一位君王管理我们不可。	¹⁹The people paid no attention to all that Samuel said. They insisted, "No! We want a king to govern us as in all the other nations.
²⁰我们也要像一般异民一样，有我们的君王来治理我们，率领我们出征作战。」	²⁰Our king shall govern us, lead us and go ahead of us in our battles."
²¹撒慕尔听见百姓所说的这一切话，就转告给上主听。	²¹Upon hearing all that his people said, Samuel repeated it to Yahweh.
²²上主对撒慕尔说：「你听从他们的话，给他们一位君王罢！」撒慕尔就吩咐以色列人说：「你们各自暂回本城去。」	²²But Yahweh said to him, "Listen to them and give them a king." Samuel then said to the Israelites, "Go back, all of you, to your own cities."
