¹有一个病人，名叫拉匝禄，住在伯达尼，即玛利亚和她姐姐玛尔大所住的村庄。	¹There was a sick man named Lazarus who was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
²玛利亚就是那曾用香液傅抹过主，并用自己的头发擦干过他脚的妇人，患病的拉匝禄是她的兄弟。	²It was the same Mary who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was sick.
³他们姊妹二人便派人到耶稣那里说：「主啊，你所爱的病了！」	³So the sisters sent this message to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick."
⁴耶稣听了，便说：「这病不至于死，只是为彰显天主的光荣，并为叫天主子因此受到光荣。」	⁴On hearing this Jesus said, "This illness will not end in death; rather it is for God's glory and the Son of God will be glorified through it."
⁵耶稣素爱玛尔大及她的妹妹和拉匝禄。	⁵It is a fact that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus;
⁶当他听说拉匝禄病了，仍在原地逗留了两天。	⁶yet, after he heard of the illness of Lazarus, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
⁷此后，才对门徒说：「我们再往犹太去罢！」	⁷Only then did he say to his disciples, "Let us go into Judea again."
⁸门徒向他说：「辣彼，近来犹太人图谋砸死你，你又要往那里去么？」	⁸They replied, "Master, recently the Jews wanted to stone you. Are you going there again?"
⁹耶稣回答说：「白日不是有十二个时辰么？人若在白日行路，不会碰跌，因为看得见这世界的光；	⁹Jesus said to them, "Are not twelve working hours needed to complete a day? Those who walk in the daytime shall not stumble, for they see the light of this world.
¹⁰人若在黑夜行路，就要碰跌，因为他没有光。」	¹⁰But those who walk at night stumble, for there is no light in them."
¹¹耶稣说了这些话，又给他们说：「我们的朋友拉匝禄睡着了，我要去叫醒他。」	¹¹After that Jesus said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going to wake him."
¹²门徒便对他说：「主，若是他睡着了，必定好了。」	¹²The disciples replied, "Lord, a sick person who sleeps will recover."
¹³耶稣原是指他的死说的，他们却以为他是指安眠睡觉说的。	¹³But Jesus had referred to Lazarus' death, while they thought that he had meant the repose of sleep.
¹⁴然后，耶稣就明明地向他们说：「拉匝禄死了。	¹⁴So Jesus said plainly, "Lazarus is dead
¹⁵为了你们，我喜欢我不在那里，好叫你们相信；我们到他那里去罢！」	¹⁵and for your sake I am glad I was not there, for now you may believe. But let us go there, where he is."
¹⁶号称狄狄摩的多默便向其他的同伴说：「我们也去，同他一起死罢！」	¹⁶Then Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go that we may die with him."
¹⁷耶稣一到了伯达尼，得知拉匝禄在坟墓里已经四天了。	¹⁷When Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.
¹⁸伯达尼靠近耶路撒冷，相距约十五「斯塔狄」，	¹⁸As Bethany is near Jerusalem, about two miles away,
¹⁹因而有许多犹太人来到玛尔大和玛利亚那里，为她们兄弟的死安慰她们。	¹⁹many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to offer consolation at their brother's death.
²⁰玛尔大一听说耶稣来了，便去迎接他；玛利亚仍坐在家里。	²⁰When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him while Mary remained sitting in the house.
²¹玛尔大对耶稣说：「主！若是你在这里，我的兄弟决不会死！	²¹And she said to Jesus, "If you had been here, my brother would not have died.
²²就是现在，我也知道：你无论向天主求什么，天主必要赐给你。」	²²But I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you."
²³耶稣对她说：「你的兄弟必定要复活。」	²³Jesus said, "Your brother will rise again."
²⁴玛尔大说：「我知道在末日复活时，他必要复活。」	²⁴Martha replied, "I know that he will rise in the resurrection, at the last day."
²⁵耶稣对她说：「我就是复活，就是生命；信从我的，即使死了，仍要活着；	²⁵But Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection; whoever believes in me, though he die, shall live.
²⁶凡活着而信从我的人，必永远不死。你信么？」	²⁶Whoever is alive by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
²⁷她回答说：「是的，主，我信你是默西亚，天主子，要来到世界上的那一位。」	²⁷Martha then answered, "Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world."
²⁸她说了这话，就去叫她的妹妹玛利亚，偷偷地说：「师傅来了，他叫你。」	²⁸After that Martha went and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, "The Master is here and is calling for you."
²⁹玛利亚一听说，立时起身到耶稣那里去了。	²⁹As soon as Mary heard this, she rose and went to him.
³⁰那时，耶稣还没有进村庄，仍在玛尔大迎接他的地方。	³⁰Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
³¹那些同玛利亚在家，安慰她的犹太人，见她急忙起身出去，便跟着她，以为她往坟墓上去哭泣。	³¹The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her, also came. When they saw her get up and go out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep.
³²当玛利亚来到耶稣所在的地方，一看见他，就俯伏在他脚前，向他说：「主！若是你在这里，我的兄弟决不会死！」	³²As for Mary, when she came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
³³耶稣看见她哭泣，还有同她一起来的犹太人也哭泣，便心神感伤，难过起来，	³³When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews also who had come with her, he was moved in the depths of his spirit and troubled.
³⁴遂说：「你们把他安放在那里？」他们回答说：「主，你来，看罢！」	³⁴Then he asked, "Where have you laid him?" They answered, "Lord, come and see."
³⁵耶稣流泪了。	³⁵And Jesus wept.
³⁶于是犹太人说：「看，他多么爱他啊！」	³⁶The Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
³⁷其中有些人说：「这个开了瞎子眼睛的，岂不能使这人也不死么？」	³⁷But some of them said, "If he could open the eyes of the blind man, could he not have kept this man from dying?"
³⁸耶稣心中又感伤起来，来到坟墓前。这坟墓是个洞穴，前面有一块石头堵着。	³⁸Jesus was deeply moved again and drew near to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across it.
³⁹耶稣说：「挪开这块石头！」死者的姐姐玛尔大向他说：「主！已经臭了，因为已有四天了。」	³⁹Jesus ordered, "Take the stone away." Martha said to him, "Lord, by now he will smell, for this is the fourth day."
⁴⁰耶稣对她说：「我不是告诉过你：如果你信，就会看到天主的光荣吗？」	⁴⁰Jesus replied, "Have I not told you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
⁴¹他们便挪开了石头；耶稣举目向上说：「父啊！我感谢你，因为你俯听了我。	⁴¹So they removed the stone. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you for you have heard me.
⁴²我本来知道你常常俯听我，但是，我说这话，是为了四周站立的群众，好叫他们信是你派遣了我。」	⁴²I knew that you hear me always; but my prayer was for the sake of these people, that they may believe that you sent me."
⁴³说完这话，便大声喊说：「拉匝禄！出来罢！」	⁴³When Jesus had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
⁴⁴死者便出来了，脚和手都缠着布条，面上还蒙着汗巾。耶稣向他们说：「解开他，让他行走罢。」	⁴⁴The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips and his face wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go."
⁴⁵那些来到玛利亚那里的犹太人，一看到耶稣所行的事，就有许多人信了他。	⁴⁵Many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw what he did;
⁴⁶他们中也有一些到法利塞人那里去，把耶稣所行的，报告给他们。	⁴⁶but some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
⁴⁷因此，司祭长和法利塞人召集了会议，说：「这人行了许多奇迹，我们怎么办呢？	⁴⁷So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the Sanhedrin Council. They said, "What are we to do? For this man keeps on giving miraculous signs.
⁴⁸如果让他这样，众人都会信从他，罗马人必要来，连我们的圣殿和民族都要除掉。」	⁴⁸If we let him go on like this, all the people will believe in him and, as a result of this, the Romans will come and sweep away our Holy Place and our nation."
⁴⁹他们中有一个名叫盖法的，正是那一年的大司祭，对他们说：「你们什么都不懂，	⁴⁹Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all nor do you see clearly what you need.
⁵⁰也不想想：叫一个人替百姓死，以免全民族灭亡：这为你们多么有利。」	⁵⁰It is better to have one man die for the people than to let the whole nation be destroyed."
⁵¹这话不是由他自己说出的，只因他是那年的大司祭，才预言了耶稣将为民族而死；	⁵¹In saying this Caiaphas did not speak for himself, but being High Priest that year, he foretold as a prophet that Jesus would die for the nation,
⁵²不但为犹太民族，而且也是为使那四散的天主的儿女都聚集归一。	⁵²and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the scattered children of God.
⁵³从那一天起，他们就议决要杀害耶稣。	⁵³So, from that day on, they were determined to kill him.
⁵⁴因此，耶稣不再公开地在犹太人中往来，却从那里往临近荒野的地方去，来到一座名叫厄弗辣因的城，在那里和他的门徒住下了。	⁵⁴Because of this, Jesus no longer moved about freely among the Jews. He withdrew instead to the country near the wilderness and stayed with his disciples in a town called Ephraim.
⁵⁵犹太人的逾越节临近了，所以，许多人在逾越节前，从乡间上了耶路撒冷，要圣洁自己。	⁵⁵The Passover of the Jews was at hand and people from everywhere were coming to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.
⁵⁶他们就寻找耶稣，并站在圣殿内，彼此谈论说：「你们想什么？他来不来过节呢？」	⁵⁶They looked for Jesus and as they stood in the Temple, they talked with one another, "What do you think? Will he come to the festival?"
⁵⁷司祭长和法利塞人早已颁发命令：如果有人知道他在那里，就该通知他们，好去捉拿他。	⁵⁷Meanwhile the chief priests and the elders had given orders that anyone who knew where he was should let them know so that they could arrest him.
