| 1以色列子民再起程出发，在约但东边的摩阿布旷野中，对着耶里哥城扎了营。 | 1Then the Israelites journeyed on and camped in the plains of Moab along the Jordan opposite Jericho. |
| 2漆颇尔的儿子巴拉克，见了以色列对阿摩黎人所做的一切； | 2Now Balak, the son of Zippor, saw all that the Israelites had done to the Amorites. |
| 3摩阿布人十分怕这民族，因为他们众多；摩阿布人对以色列子民大起恐慌， | 3And the Moabites were afraid of Israel, because they were a very numerous people. In fact, they were terrified. |
| 4于是对米德杨的长老说：「现在这群人要吞并我们四周的一切，有如牛吃尽田间的青草。」漆颇尔的儿子巴拉克，其时正是摩阿布的君王， | 4So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian, "Look, this horde is destroying everything around us as easily as the ox eats the grass of the field." So Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab at the time, |
| 5遂遣使者往幼发拉的河阿玛伍人之地的培托尔去，见贝敖尔的儿子巴郎，请他说：「看，由埃及来了一个民族，遮盖了地面，现今正住在我的对面。 | 5sent messengers to summon Balaam, son of Beor, at Pethor near the river in the land of the Amonites. Balak said, "A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the earth and are settling opposite me. |
| 6现在请你来，替我咒骂这民族，因为他们比我强大，或许这样我能将他们击败，从此地赶走；因为我知道，你祝福的，必蒙祝福；你咒骂的，必蒙咒骂。」 | 6Come and put a curse on these people because they are too powerful for me. Then perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I well know that those you bless are indeed blessed and those you curse are cursed." |
| 7摩阿布和米德杨的长老于是带着卜金去了；到了巴郎那里，将巴拉克的话告诉了他。 | 7The elders of Moab and Midian set out, taking with them the fee for divination. They went to Balaam and gave him Balak's message. |
| 8他回答他们说：「今夜你们在这里过夜，我要依照上主吩咐我的话答复你们。」这样，摩阿布的缙绅就在巴郎那里住下了。 | 8Balaam said to them, "Stay here tonight and I will give you whatever answer Yahweh will have given me." So the Moabite elders stayed in Balaam's house. |
| 9天主来到巴郎那里说：「与你在一起的是些什么人？」 | 9God came to Balaam and asked him, "Who are these men with you?" |
| 10巴郎答复天主说：「是摩阿布的君王，漆颇尔的儿子巴拉克，打发些人来告诉我说： | 10Balaam said to God, "Balak, son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent them to me with this message: |
| 11看从埃及来了一个民族，遮盖了地面，现在请你来替我咒骂他们，使我或许能与他们交战，将他们驱逐。」 | 11A people has come out of Egypt and covers the face of the earth. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps I shall then be able to fight and drive them away." |
| 12天主对巴郎说：「你不可与他们同去，你不可咒骂这民族，因为他们是受祝福的。」 | 12But God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them; you must not put a curse on them because they are blessed." |
| 13巴郎早晨起来就对巴拉克的缙绅说：「你们回本国去罢！因为上主不许我同你们一起去。」 | 13Next morning Balaam got up and said to the elders of Balak, "Return to your country for Yahweh has refused to let me go with you." |
| 14摩阿布的缙绅就起身回到巴拉克那里说：「巴郎不愿同我们一起来。」 | 14So the Moabite elders returned to Balak and said, "Balaam refused to come with us." |
| 15巴拉克于是又派比以前更多更尊贵的缙绅去。 | 15Balak sent other leaders, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. |
| 16他们去见巴郎，对他说：「漆颇尔的儿子巴拉克这样说：请你不要推辞到我这里来， | 16They went to Balaam and said, "This is what Balak, son of Zippor says: Do not refuse to come to me; |
| 17因为我必丰富地酬谢你。凡你要的，我都照办；只要你前来，替我咒骂这民族。」 | 17I will greatly honor you; whatever you ask of me I will do for you. Please come and lay a curse on this people for me." |
| 18巴郎答复巴拉克的使臣说：「即使巴拉克给我满屋的金银，我也不能做任何大小的事，违犯上主我天主的命令。 | 18Balaam answered the servants of Balak, "Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold I could not do anything great or small beyond the command of Yahweh, my God. |
| 19现在，请你们今夜也在这里住下，看看上主还要对我说什么。」 | 19Now you, too, stay here tonight as the others did, till I wait for what else Yahweh may tell me." |
| 20夜间天主来到巴郎那里，对他说：「这些人既然来邀请你，你就起身同他们去罢！但是你只应做我吩咐你的事。」 | 20God came to Balaam at night and said, "If these men have come to summon you, go with them, but you may only do what I tell you." |
| 21巴郎早晨起来，备好驴，就同摩阿布的缙绅一起去了。 | 21Balaam got up next morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite leaders. |
| 22因为他起身走了，天主发了怒；上主的使者在路上挡住他的去路。当时他骑着驴，还有两个童仆跟着。 | 22But the anger of God was aroused because of his going and Yahweh's angel posted himself on the road, a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam was riding on the donkey and his two boys were with him. |
| 23那驴一看见上主的使者，持着拔出的刀站在路上，就离开正路，走入田中去了。巴郎便打那驴，要牠回到路上。 | 23When the donkey saw the angel, she turned off the road and went into the field. Then Balaam hit the donkey to get her back on to the road. |
| 24以后，上主的使者又站在葡萄园间的窄路上，两面有墙。 | 24But the angel of Yahweh stood on a narrow lane between vineyards with a stone wall in either side. |
| 25那驴一见上主的使者，就紧靠著墙，将巴郎的脚挤在墙上，他又打了那驴。 | 25When the donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, she shrank against the wall crushing Balaam's foot against it so he beat her again. |
| 26上主的使者又往前行，站在窄狭的地方，左右无路可走， | 26Then Yahweh's angel went ahead and stopped at a narrow place where there was no room to go either to the right or left. |
| 27那驴又见上主的使者，遂趴在巴郎下；巴郎大怒，用棍杖打那驴。 | 27When the donkey saw Yahweh's angel there, she lay down under Balaam; he was angry and beat her with a stick. |
| 28上主遂开了驴的口，对巴郎说：「我对你作了什么？你竟三次打我？」 | 28But now Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you to make you beat me three times?" |
| 29巴郎回答那驴说：「因为你玩弄我。我若手中有刀，早杀了你。」 | 29Balaam answered, "You have made a fool of me. If I had a sword just now I would kill you." |
| 30那驴对巴郎说：「我不是你从起初直到今日所骑的驴吗？平常我是否对你这样做？」他回答说：「不」。 | 30And the donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your own donkey that you have ridden to this day? Have I ever dared to do this to you?" He said, "No!" |
| 31上主遂开了巴郎的眼，使他看见上主的使者，手持拔出的刀站在路上，他就躬身俯伏在地。 | 31Then Yahweh opened Balaam's eyes and he saw Yahweh's angel standing on the road with a drawn sword. He bowed and fell downward, his face to the ground. |
| 32上主的使者对他说：「你为什么三次打你的驴？看，是我出来挡路，因为你走的这路，在我面前是邪路。 | 32Yahweh's angel said to him, "Why did you strike your donkey three times? I have come here to oppose you because you are going a wrong way. |
| 33驴看见了我，就在我面前回避了三次；幸亏牠回避了我，不然我早杀了你，只留下了牠。」 | 33The donkey saw me and turned away three times. Otherwise I would have killed you, but not her." |
| 34巴郎于是对上主的使者说：「我犯了罪，因为我不知道是你站在路上拦阻我。现在，如果你以为不对，我就回去好了。」 | 34And Balaam said to Yahweh's angel, "I did not want to sin. I did not know you were posted against me on the road. But if this journey displeases you I will go back." |
| 35上主的使者对巴郎说；「你同这些人去罢！但是你只应说我吩咐你的话。」巴郎于是同巴拉克的缙绅一起去了。 | 35Yahweh's angel said to Balaam, "Go with these men, but you may say only what I tell you." So Balaam went on with Balak's men. |
| 36巴拉克听说巴郎来了，就到阿尔摩阿布──此城临近阿尔农河边，在国界的尽头，──去迎接他。 | 36When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went to meet him at the boundary city of Moab on the Arnon border. |
| 37巴拉克对巴郎说：「我不是派遣了使者去请你？你为什么不到我这里来，莫非我不能酬报你？」 | 37Then Balak said to Balaam, "I sent an urgent summons to you; why didn't you come? Did you think I would not pay you well enough?" |
| 38巴郎答复巴拉克说：「看，我已到你这里来了，但我能随便说什么吗？我只能说天主吩咐我说的话。」 | 38Balaam then said to Balak, "Now I have come to you; but what can I say? Only what Yahweh puts on my lips." |
| 39巴郎遂同巴拉克起身，来到了克黎雅特胡祚特。 | 39So Balaam went with Balak and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. |
| 40巴拉克祭杀了牛羊，餽送给巴郎和同他在一起的缙绅。 | 40There Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep and gave some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him. |
| 41到了次日早晨，巴拉克领巴郎上了巴摩特巴耳去，从那里能看到一部分以色列人民。 | 41Next morning Balak took Balaam up to the high places of Baal and from there he saw some of the people of Israel. |
