¹撒慕尔拿出油具，把油倒在他头上，口吻他说：「不是上主给你傅油，立你作他百姓以色列的首领吗？是你要统治上主的百姓，从四周的仇人手中解救百姓。这是上主给你傅油立你为自己产业首领的先兆：	¹And Samuel took a little vial of oil and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said: Behold, the Lord hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance, and thou shalt deliver his people out of the hands of their enemies, that are round about them. And this shall be a sign unto thee, that God hath anointed thee to be prince.
²今天你离开我以后，在本雅明边境辣黑耳的墓旁，正午你会遇见两个人，他们要对你说：你去找的那些母驴，已找到了。为母驴的事，你父亲早已忘怀，现在他却为你们着急说：为我的儿子我该怎么办？」	²When thou shalt depart from me this day, thou shalt find two men by the sepulchre of Rachel in the borders of Benjamin to the south, and they shall say to thee: The asses are found which thou wentest to seek: and thy father thinking no more of the asses is concerned for you, and saith: What shall I do for my son?
³你从那里再往前走，来到德波辣的橡树旁时，要遇见三个上贝特耳去敬礼天主的人：一人牵着三只小山羊，一人拿着三张饼，一人带着一皮囊酒。	³And when thou shalt depart from thence, and go farther on, and shalt come to the oak of Thabor, there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine.
⁴他们要向你请安，给你两张饼，你要从他们手中接过来。	⁴And they will salute thee, and will give thee two loaves, and thou shalt take them at their hand.
⁵此后，你要往天主的基贝亚去──在那里驻有培肋舍特人的官吏──你一进城，就会遇见一群正从高丘下来的先知，在他们前面有弹弦的、有打鼓的、有吹笛的、有弹琴的，他们正在出神说妙语。	⁵After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where the garrison of the Philistines is: and when thou shalt be come there into the city, thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place, with a psaltery and a timbrel, and a pipe, and a harp before them, and they shall be prophesying.
⁶这时，上主的神会突然降在你身上，你也要同他们一起出神说妙语；你要变成另一个人。	⁶And the spirit of the Lord shall come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be changed into another man.
⁷当你遇见这些现象时，你应见机行事，因为天主必与你同在。	⁷When therefore these signs shall happen to thee, do whatsoever thy hand shall find, for the Lord is with thee.
⁸你要在我以先下到基耳加耳去；我要下到你那里去奉献全燔祭，宰杀和平祭牺牲。你要等候七天，直到我到了你那里，告诉你当作的事。」	⁸And thou shalt go down before me to Galgal, (for I will come down to thee,) that thou mayest offer an oblation, and sacrifice victims of peace: seven days shalt thou wait, O till I come to thee, and I will shew thee what thou art to do.
⁹当他转身离开撒慕尔时，天主就改变了他的心，那一切先兆在当天都实现了。	⁹So when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave unto him another heart, and all these things came to pass that day.
¹⁰他从那里来到基贝亚时，果然有一群先知迎面而来，天主的神突然降在他身上，他就在他们中间出神说起妙语来。	¹⁰And they came to the foresaid hill, and behold a company of prophets met him: and the spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he prophesied in the midst of them.
¹¹凡先前认识他的人，见他同先知们一起出神说妙语，就彼此说：「克士的儿子遭遇了什么事？怎么，连撒乌耳也列在先知之中？」	¹¹And all that had known him yesterday and the day before, seeing that he was with the prophets, and prophesied, said to each other: What is this that hath happened to the son of Cis? Is Saul also among the prophets?
¹²他们中有人回答说：「他们的父亲是谁？」因此有一句俗话说：「怎么，连撒乌耳也列在先知中吗？」	¹²And one answered another, saying: And who is their father? therefore it became a proverb: Is Saul also among the prophets?
¹³他说完妙语后，就回了家。	¹³And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
¹⁴撒乌耳的一个叔父问他和他的仆人说：「你们往那里去了？」撒乌耳回答说：「找母驴去了；我们看没法找着，就到了撒慕尔那里。」	¹⁴And Saul's uncle said to him, and to his servant: Whither went you? They answered: To seek the asses: and not finding them we went to Samuel.
¹⁵撒乌耳的叔父向他说：「请你告诉我，撒慕尔给你说了些什么？」	¹⁵And his uncle said to him: Tell me what Samuel said to thee.
¹⁶撒乌耳回答他叔父说：「他告诉我们，母驴的确已经找到了。」但撒慕尔所说有关立君王的话，撒乌耳却没有告诉他。	¹⁶And Saul said to his uncle: He told us that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom of which Samuel had spoken to him, he told him not.
¹⁷撒慕尔召集人民来到米兹帕上主面前，	¹⁷And Samuel called together the people to the Lord in Maspha:
¹⁸对以色列子民说：「上主以色列的天主这样说：是我领以色列出离了埃及，从埃及人和一切压迫你们的国家中拯救了你们。	¹⁸And he said to the children of Israel: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all the kings who afflicted you.
¹⁹然而今天你们抛弃了你们的天主，虽然他从你们一切灾难和压迫中解救了你们，你们却说：不，你该给我们立一位君王！现今你们要按照你们的支派和家族到上主面前来。」	¹⁹But you this day have rejected your God, who only hath saved you out of all your evils and your tribulations: and you have said: Nay: but set a king over us. Now therefore stand before the Lord by your tribes, and by your families.
²⁰撒慕尔就叫以色列众支派上前来，本雅明支派中了签；	²⁰And Samuel brought to him all the tribes of Israel, and the lot fell on the tribe of Benjamin.
²¹他叫本雅明支派按照家族上前来，玛特黎家族中了签，他叫玛特黎家族各个男子上前来，克士的儿子撒乌耳中了签，大家便寻找他，却没有找着。	²¹And he brought the tribe of Benjamin and the kindreds thereof, and the lot fell Upon the kindred of Metri, and it came to Saul the son of Cis. They sought him therefore and he was not found.
²²他们再求问上主说：「这人到这里来了没有？」上主回答说：「看，他隐藏在行李中。」	²²And after this they consulted the Lord whether he would come thither. And the Lord answered: Behold he is hidden at home.
²³人们就赶快去将他从那里请出来，他站在百姓当中，高出众人一肩。	²³And they ran and fetched him thence: and he stood in the midst of the people, and he was higher than any of the people from the shoulders and upward.
²⁴撒慕尔就向民众说：「你们看了上主所拣选的吗？在全人民中，没有一人可与他相比。」众百姓就欢呼说：「君王万岁！」	²⁴And Samuel said to all the people: Surely you see him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people. And all the people cried and said: God save the king.
²⁵撒慕尔向民众说明了君王的权利，并写在书卷上，放在上主面前。然后撒慕尔打发民众各自回了家。	²⁵And Samuel told the people the law of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord: and Samuel sent away all the people, every one to his own house.
²⁶撒乌耳也回基贝亚本家去了；有些为天主所感动的勇士也跟他去了，	²⁶Saul also departed to his own house in Gabaa: and there went with him a part of the army, whose hearts God had touched.
²⁷但有些无赖汉却说：「这人怎能拯救我们？」就看不起他，也未给他送礼。	²⁷But the children of Belial said: Shall this fellow be able to save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents, but he dissembled as though he heard not.
