| 1他们遂派遣使者同他商谈和平说： | 1Then the kings and the princes of all the cities and provinces, of Syria, Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya, and Cilicia sent their ambassadors, who coming to Holofernes, said: |
| 2「看，我们是拿步高大王的奴仆，俯伏在你面前，你看怎样好，就怎样处置我们罢！ | 2Let thy indignation towards us cease: for it is better for us to live and serve Nabuchodonosor the great king, and be subject to thee, than to die and to perish, or suffer the miseries of slavery. |
| 3看，我们的住宅、所有的土地和麦田，以及羊群牛群，帐幕旁所有的羊圈，都摆在你面前，你可任意取用。 | 3All our cities and our possessions, all mountains and hills, and fields, and herds of oxen, and flocks of cheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our goods, and families are in thy sight: |
| 4看，我们的城与城中的居民，都是你的奴仆，你来，看着怎样好，就怎样对待他们罢！」 | 4Let all we have be subject to thy law. |
| 5使者来到敖罗斐乃前，就向他说了这些话。 | 5Both we and our children are thy servants. |
| 6他便同他的军队，下到沿海一带，派兵据守设防的城，又在他们中选拔壮丁，作后备兵。 | 6Come to us a peaceable lord, and use our service as it shall please thee. |
| 7城中的居民，及其附近境内的人民，都带着花冠，跳着舞，敲着鼓，出来迎接他。 | 7Then he came down from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and made himself master of every city, and all the inhabitants of the land. |
| 8但是，他还是要破坏他们的圣地，砍伐他们的神林，因为他曾受命，要铲除地上所有的神祇，使万国一致崇拜拿步高一人，万民异口同声称他为神。 | 8And from all the cities he took auxiliaries valiant men, and chosen for war. |
| 9随后来到厄斯得隆对面，即犹太平原前的多堂附近， | 9And so great a fear lay upon all those provinces, that the inhabitants of all the cities, both princes and nobles, as well as the people, went out to meet him at his coming. |
| 10安营在革巴与史托颇里之间，在那里驻扎了一个月，为把自己部队的辎重集合起来。 | 10And received him with garlands, and lights, and dances, and tumbrels, and flutes. |
| 11 | 11And though they did these things, they could not for all that mitigate the fierceness of his heart: |
| 12 | 12For he both destroyed their cities and cut down their groves. |
| 13 | 13For Nabuchodonosor the king had commanded him to destroy all the gods of the earth, that he only might be called God by those nations which could be brought under him by the power of Holofernes. |
| 14 | 14And when he had passed through all Syria Sobal, and all Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans into the land of Gabaa, |
| 15 | 15And he took possession of their cities, and stayed there for thirty days, in which days he commanded all the troops of his army to be united. |
