| 1全会众都大声喧嚷，人民哭了一夜。 | 1Wherefore the whole multitude crying wept that night. |
| 2以色列子民都抱怨梅瑟和亚郎；全会众对他们说：「巴不得我们都死在埃及地，都死在旷野里！ | 2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying: |
| 3为什么上主引我们到那地方死在刀下，叫我们的妻子儿女当作战利品？再回埃及去，为我们岂不更好？」 | 3Would God that we had died in Egypt and would God we may die in this vast wilderness, and that the Lord may not bring us into this land, lest we fall by the sword, and our wives and children be led away captives. Is it not better to return into Egypt? |
| 4于是彼此说：「我们另立头目，回埃及去。」 | 4And they said one to another: Let us appoint a captain, and let us return into Egypt. |
| 5梅瑟和亚郎遂俯伏在以色列子民全会众前。 | 5And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell down flat upon the ground before the multitude of the children of Israel. |
| 6侦探那地方的人中，有农的儿子若苏厄和耶孚乃的儿子加肋布，他们撕裂了自己的衣服， | 6But Josue the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephone, who themselves also had viewed the land, rent their garments, |
| 7告诉以色列子民全会众说：「我们侦探所经过的地方，确是一片极好的地方。 | 7And said to all the multitude of the children of Israel: The land which we have gone round is very good: |
| 8若上主恩待我们，必引我们到那里去，将那地方赐给我们。那实在是一块流奶流蜜的地方。 | 8If the Lord be favourable, he will bring us into it, and give us a land flowing with milk and honey. |
| 9只要你们不反抗上主，就不必怕那地方的人民，因为他们要作我们的掠物；护佑他们的，离开了他们，上主却与我们同在；所以不要怕他们。」 | 9Be not rebellious against the Lord: and fear ye not the people of this land, for we are able to eat them up as bread. All aid is gone from them: the Lord is with us, fear ye not. |
| 10全会众正说要用石头砸死他们时，上主的荣耀在会幕上显示给全以色列子民。 | 10And when all the multitude cried out, and would have stoned them, the glory of the Lord appeared over the tabernacle of the covenant to all the children of Israel. |
| 11上主对梅瑟说：「这人民轻慢我要到几时呢？我虽在他们中行了那些神蹟，他们仍不相信我，要到几时呢？ | 11And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people detract me? how long will they not believe me for all the signs that I have wrought before them? |
| 12我要用瘟疫打击他们，铲除他们，使你成为一个比他们更强大，更昌盛的民族。」 | 12I will strike them therefore with pestilence, and will consume them: but thee I will make a ruler over a great nation, and a mightier than this is. |
| 13但是梅瑟对上主说：「埃及人如果听说这事，因为你曾用威力由他们中领出这民族来， | 13And Moses said to the Lord: That the Egyptians, from the midst of whom thou hast brought forth this people, |
| 14他们将说什么？这地方的居民也曾听说：你上主是在这民族中；你上主曾面对面地发显出来，你的云彩常停在他们上面；白日你乘云柱，黑夜你乘火柱，走在他们前面。 | 14And the inhabitants of this land, (who have heard that thou, O Lord, art among this people, and art seen face to face, and thy cloud protecteth them, and thou goest before them in a pillar of a cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night,) |
| 15现在，如果你消灭这民族如消灭一个人一样，这些曾听到你声名的外邦民族必要议论说： | 15May hear that thou hast killed so great a multitude as it were one man and may say: |
| 16『由于上主不能引这民族进入他对他们所誓许的地方，就在旷野将他们杀了。』 | 16He could not bring the people into the land for which he had sworn, therefore did he kill them in the wilderness. |
| 17吾主，如今求你，大发宽容，如你曾声明说： | 17Let their the strength of the Lord be magnified, as thou hast sworn, saying: |
| 18上主缓于发怒，富于仁慈，宽赦过犯和罪过，但决不豁免惩罚，父亲的过犯，要向子孙追讨，直到三代四代。 | 18The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and leaving no man clear, who visitest the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. |
| 19求你大发仁慈，宽恕这人民的罪过，就如从埃及一直到现在，你宽赦了他们一样。」 | 19Forgive, I beseech thee, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of thy mercy, as thou hast been merciful to them from their going out of Egypt unto this place. |
| 20上主回答说：「我就照你祈求的宽赦他们； | 20And the Lord said: I have forgiven according to thy word. |
| 21但是我以我的生命，以充满全地的上主的荣耀起誓： | 21As I live: and the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. |
| 22这些见了我的荣耀，见了我在埃及和旷野里所行的神蹟的人，已十次试探了我，不听我的话， | 22But yet all the men that have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have done in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now ten times, and have not obeyed my voice, |
| 23他们决不能见我对他们祖先誓许的地方；凡轻慢我的人，决不会见到那地方。 | 23Shall not see the land for which I aware to their fathers, neither shall any one of them that hath detracted me behold it. |
| 24惟有我的仆人加肋布，因怀有另一种精神，全心服从我，我必引他进入他去过的地方，他的后裔必占有那地方为产业。 | 24My servant Caleb, who being full of another spirit hath followed me, I will bring into this land which he hath gone round: and his seed shall possess it. |
| 25现今阿玛肋克人和客纳罕人盘据在山谷中，明天你们应转身向红海出发，往旷野去。」 | 25For the Amalecite and the Chanaanite dwell in the valleys. Tomorrow remove the camp, and return into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. |
| 26上主吩咐梅瑟和亚郎说： | 26And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: |
| 27「这个邪恶的会众抱怨我要到几时？以色列子民抱怨我的话我都听见了。 | 27How long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. |
| 28你对他们说：我以我的生命起誓：──上主的断语──我必照你们在我耳中所说的话，对待你们： | 28Say therefore to them: As I live, saith the Lord: According as you have spoken in my hearing, so will I do to you. |
| 29你们中凡二十岁以上登过记的，凡抱怨过我的，都要倒毙在这旷野中。 | 29In the wilderness shall your carcasses lie. All you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward, and have murmured against me, |
| 30你们决不得进入我誓许给你们居住的地方，只有耶孚乃的儿子加肋布和农的儿子若苏厄除外。 | 30Shall not enter into the land, over which I lifted up my bend to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephone, and Josue the son of Nun. |
| 31至于你们的幼童，你们曾说他们要当战利品的，我要领他们进去，使他们享受你们所轻视的地方。 | 31But your children, of whom you said, that they should be a prey to the enemies, will I bring in: that they may see the land which you have despised. |
| 32至于你们，你们必倒毙在这旷野中； | 32Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness. |
| 33你们的子女要在旷野漂流四十年，受你们背信之罚，直到你们的尸首在旷野中烂尽。 | 33Your children shall wander in the desert forty years, and shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers be consumed ill the desert, |
| 34你们侦探那地方的日子，共计四十天，一天算一年，你们应受四十年的罪罚，叫你们知道我放弃你们是什么一回事。 | 34According to the number of the forty days, wherein you viewed the land: year shall be counted for a day. And forty years you shall receive your iniquities, and shall know my revenge: |
| 35我上主既说了，也必对这聚集反抗我的邪恶会众这样做：在这旷野他们都要灭绝，在这里都要死尽。」 | 35For as I have spoken, so will I do to all this wicked multitude, that hath risen up together against me: in this wilderness shall it faint away and die. |
| 36梅瑟派遣去侦探那地方的人，回来以后，对那地方散布谣言，致使全会众抱怨梅瑟。 | 36Therefore all the men, whom Moses had sent to view the land, and who at their return had made the whole multitude to murmur against him, speaking ill of the land that it was naught, |
| 37这些对那地方讲说坏话的人，都遭了灾罚，死在上主面前； | 37Died and were struck in the sight of the Lord. |
| 38前去侦探那地方的人，只有农的儿子若苏厄和耶孚乃的儿子加肋布，保全了性命。 | 38But Josue. the son of Nun. and Caleb the son of Jephone lived, of all them that had gone to view the land. |
| 39梅瑟将这些话告诉了全以色列子民；人民都非常忧闷。 | 39And Moses spoke all these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly. |
| 40次日清晨他们起来，要上山顶去，说：「我们犯了罪，现在我们已准备好，要往上主所说的地方去。」 | 40And behold rising up very early in the morning, they went up to the top of the mountain, and said: We are ready to go up to the place, of which the Lord hath spoken: for we have sinned. |
| 41但是梅瑟说：「你们为什么要违背上主的命令？这事必不会成功。 | 41And Moses said to them: Why transgress you the word of the Lord, which shall not succeed prosperously with you? |
| 42不要上去，因为上主不在你们中间，难免不被敌人击败。 | 42Go not up, for the Lord is not with you: lest you fall before your enemies. |
| 43因为阿玛肋克人和客纳罕人在那里要抵挡你们，你们必丧身刀下；你们既背离了上主，上主自然不再与你们同在。」 | 43The Amalecite and the Chanaanite are before you, and by their sword you shall fall, because you would not consent to the Lord, neither will the Lord be with you. |
| 44他们仍擅自上了山顶；但上主的约柜和梅瑟没有由营幕中移动。 | 44But they being blinded went up to the top of the mountain. But the ark of the testament of the Lord and Moses departed not from the camp. |
| 45住在山中的阿玛肋克人和客纳罕人就下来，击杀了他们，将他们追击到曷尔玛。 | 45And the Amalecite came down, and the Chanaanite that dwelt in the mountain: and smiting and slaying them pursued them as far as Horma. |
